When the end of December rolls around and the year-end lists start appearing, the idea of creating said lists can be daunting. Good thing we're like Santa Claus and have been making a list and checking it more than twice throughout 2023.
Compilations like these prove that time is, in fact, a construct. You may see a restaurant below and think, "Wait, that opened this year?" or, "I thought that one closed two years ago."
In 2023, more than 30 restaurants and bars opened and around 10 restaurants closed in Baton Rouge and the surrounding areas. We said hello to bagel sandwiches and select wine from Mulberry Market, but goodbye to Kalurah Street Grill and Slap Ya Mama boiled street corn at Gov't Taco.
Library Wine and Provisions brought "a little flair to Ascension Parish" with personal lockers and wine concierges. Cava replaced Zoë's Kitchen and Blue Store Chicken opened its seventh location.
We saw a surge of restaurants that closed temporarily and reopened with modern interiors and delectable menus, breathing fresh air into the Baton Rouge restaurant scene.
Lists like these offer a chance to remember the buzz of energy when a new restaurant opens and an even greater sense of wonder when you walk into a restaurant for the first time.
Most importantly, it's exciting to think of all the possibilities for what's to come.

You're on thin ice here.
Just make sure you don't predict what restaurants will close down in 2024. We can't be having those types of vile threads
I know you're newer here and I can explain if you don't get what I'm referring to

For what they charge you for a salad I am surprised they haven't closed all of their locations. The grift is real and it is working.

Can't think of any off the top of my head, but the closed list seems a little light, unless some of these places closed in 2022.
Smoothie King at State and Highland, was replaced by DP Dough.
Off The Hook on Burbank closed and was replaced by Jude's Hot Chicken and Shrimp.
Looks like Bullfish moved to Airline (when did that happen?) and Pink Agave is moving into the hotel on Nicholson.
Can't keep track of what opens and closes at the old Louie's location on State St. Currently the Bayou Affect.
Murphy's Bar on Chimes not listed. Closed bars: Reggies and Happy's is moving.
New York Bagel is closing the Lee Drive location and opening at the old Fat Cow on Highland.

Hive pizza was fine, but that location is terrible and there is too much fast service pizza competition nearby
It didn't have a chance

The Jambalaya Shoppe on Essen and Perkins closed in 2023.. Very disappointing.
And I think Rock Paper Taco's days are numbered on Perkins.

Olive or Twist might keep them in business. Taco Tuesday at RPT is a solid deal.

from the new list; have been to:
Library
Brasas
Chai Thai Lao
recommend Library (food was great but it was hot AF in there because of the windows up front - should be fine in winter)
Brasas - food was delicious and something different
chai Thai Lao - how do you screw up pad thai? It was so nasty. To be fair, we also had two apps (cauliflower and crab rangoon) that were great. A perk - if you wanted to leave here and visit the nameless bar where people drink and night; its just a few steps away.

Is that the same Pink Agave from downtown Ponchatoula? If so I shiver to think what the F&B board will have to say about them

I’ve enjoyed this one quite a bit. Pepper steak, Drunken Noodles, Egg Rolls —- all are very good. Had the pad thai once also, thought it was pretty good too.
