Hmm. I would think they would need to alert the public...

Where does anything state the opening of Morganza?

not sure, just going on what i've read

if they are opening them early, this is likely the reason

Nah. Two things. 1. No water near them yet. 2. probably just a test.

half the time when you pass there they have one or two open, for maintenance or other reasons i assume

but i'd imagine if the forebay is filling, they are all closed, unless theyve gotten the order to open

They had gates open yesterday when I crossed it. There wasn't water in the forebay. I just crossed it and all gates are down. The is about 5 ft of water up to the gates now.

My wife has family that lives in Simmesport on Highway 105 next to the levee. Needless to say they're a little tense right now.

The opened and closed a couple of bays earlier this week at Bonnet Carre to train new employees. They were all closed yesterday. A open bay or two, for a few hours, doesn't amount to much in the big picture.

re: Morganza
Aside from the boilerplate letter that goes out every year, I'm pretty sure people in the floodway have been made aware that there's a high probability of this happening. If they don't know by now, they're not paying attention or are in denial.

Why is it scary?

That is standard procedures for any natural disaster evacuation.

scary was poor word choice. More like ominous, Iminent, foregone conclusion, etc

can't they just build a massive vacuum to suck up all this extra water and just dump it into the gulf?

I don't have time to read through this thread, how are conditions around Memphis? I've read about Mud Island.

Pretty bad. Some areas of town are being urged to evacuate. Crest won't be until middle of next week.
