Noon update: River at 53.74 feet

NATCHEZ — The Mississippi River at Natchez currently sits at 53.74 feet.
It is expected to reach 53.8 by the end of the day.
The river is still predicted to crest at 64 feet on May 22.
Water has not yet reached the Vidalia Riverfront. Crews did begin work this morning to begin placing Hesco Bastion instant levees around Riverpark Medical Center.
Louisiana Department of Corrections officials, local sheriffs and officials met this morning to discuss public safety and said a plan is in place if prisons need to be evacuated.
Fifth District Levee Board President Reynold Minsky attended the meeting and said all levees continue to look strong. He said the biggest worry for the board is unknown sand boils, which the board is constantly working to find.
Water is seeping through sandbags at the lowest point on Silver Street in Natchez. Pumps are being used to pump water back into the river in hopes of keeping the street clear.
Until flood worries wane, The Natchez Democrat will post daily river updates at noon and 5 p.m. Breaking news and other alerts will be posted throughout the day, as available.

I just flew over BR this afternoon and the bayou that runs just north of Exxon Plat is pretty full.
There are no structures to stop the unregulated flow of water from the Mississippi river from entering the mainland

At the Plaquemine ferry. By far the highest I've seen it. The ferry is also having to shut down every day for maintenance due to the rising water

This is what bothers me. I live in Bayou Sorrell so we have levees on both sides. If the Baton Rouge levees get under too much pressure and scared they will break, they will blow the levees on the Plaquemine side and in the Spillway down here which will completely flood everyone down here.

It is not a fuse plug levee.

I know a few plants on the river are getting ready to shut down soon because they will have submerged pumps that don't like to be submerged

Mikelbr, you talking about in Erwinville? I don't get to hang out much in the bars....kids keep me too busy, but I often drop in at the drive thru daquari shop across the street from the Erwinville Exxon on my way home from work

Do some research before posting about someone being ignorant. It isn't very hard to blow a levee.

Water topping the Potato Levee in 2008

Once the water tops the levee it fills the forebay. Once topped it ususually colapses as seen happening above.
If not, once the river receeds a section of levee is dug up, (like potatos) allowing the water to receed back into the river. (assuming the gates were not opened.

I work at Georgia Gulf, we aren't shutting down but we are praying the levees hold.

I'm no hydraulic engineer, but for the forebay to fill up 12', wouldn't the river have to rise 12 feet

Neither am I... But from what I understand, the Morganza forebay is surrounded by levees. As soon as the river tops the lowest levee - the Potato Levee, in this case - it's going to fill the enclosed forebay area, assuming the river continues to rise, which it will.

Previous posters have said water has started to top the levee, it's 10-12' high and the area is about 3,000 acres. Maybe one of the OT engineers can tell us how quickly 30,000 to 36,000 acre feet of water will move into the forebay...

If the Potato Levee is 1,500' long (per WAG Analysis) and is being overtopped by a depth of 1", I figure it'll take about 100 hours to transfer 36,000 acre feet of water. So if my assumptions and calcs are correct (and that's a GIANT "if") the forebay should fill pretty quickly.

I did my research.
A fuse plug level has accommodations for explosives e slurry mixtures.

The potato levee is at least a 2-3 miles long. It stretches from the S guide levee to the N guide. The '08 damage was just repaired this past fall. Took a crew with heavy equipment most of the summer to complete.

I know right around I-110 that the top of the bank sits at 52'. Not sure what the top of the bank is in Exxon.

If that's the case, and the entire length is being overtopped, the forebay was probably full this morning! Seriously!
