re: No Flow Rates, Levee System failure scenario.. quite possible

Vicksburg is at 2.31 per the web link I gave on pg1. Subtract the .65 or so for Old river locks and .15-ish for Morganza (didn't take the time to look up the current real values) and that gets you pretty close to the 1.5 number for BR.

River Data
Here's a site I just found. Hover over the dots to get info. Not all gage stations have flow rate.It is in the 1.4's in BR.

Damn, I just came in from doing some spring cleaning on the ole basser boat in preparation for some fishin' in the morning on False River. I thought for a moment I had gone to the AboveTopSecret.com conspiracy theory site (that place is a hoot!). Guess I should scrap the fishin idea and load up the boat with survival essentials for when the levee breaks (or the rapture occurs, whichever comes first).

I thought we were discussing failure of the Morganza spillway structure, not the old river structures? Mass confusion... swapping back and forth between two totally different scenarios.
re: Morganza 101 for dummies

Excessive resistance to flow thru the Morganza and Atchafalaya spillways could cause water levels to increase above preductions on the outflow (downstream) side of the Morganza floodway structure. That means the will be less elevation difference between the river side and the spillway side of the structure which means less flow thru the gates. It gets constipated!

Once the river gets back to below ~37' (BR gage) or so, there's no water against the Morganza gates, so worst case they can be close onced the river gets back down to a manageable level. Like others have said, there is a very large chunk of land between the Ms river and the spillway gates. Remember, Old River is just across the forebay from the morganza structure. The river changed course AWAY from that area, leaving this oxbow lake hundreds of years ago because it didn't want to go in that direction.

I call BS on whoever the caller was on that radio show. No way the river can go from 1.5 to 1.8, then back to 1.6 in one day. The BR flow rate is in the 1.3's currently per this [link=(link)]https://waterdata.usgs.gov/la/nwis/uv/?site_no=07374000&PARAmeter_cd=00065,72020,63160,00060[/link].

Fishfighter, could you tell me more about the E side of the Morganza spillway being eaten away by the Miss? I am a regular in that area and can't figure out what levee you are referring to. Downstream of teh Spillway is dry at this time. Behind the spillway (the forebay) is pretty much still water at this point. What levee are you referring to?

I agree....I worried about him all evening. But, he told me that even if he had fallen overboard and gotten washed across the levee the current dropped to nothing 30-40 yds into the forebay and the water was only ~4 ft deep. One of their boats was anchored on the river side at one point. The anchor slipped and the boat went over the levee before they could crank up the outboard. They could not get back (too much current and too much of a climb) to the river side and had to load the boat back on the trailer along the forebay guidelevee and then re-launch on the river side. Damn kids!

Son and several of his buddies just got home after spending the evening bow fishing along the Morganza potato levee. They were in boats on the river side of the levee. He said the river side is still ~2 ft higher than the forebay and the current over the levee is strong. He watched one section of the potato levee collapse and wash out while he was there. By tomorrow, the forebay should be level with the river.

The potato levee is at least a 2-3 miles long. It stretches from the S guide levee to the N guide. The '08 damage was just repaired this past fall. Took a crew with heavy equipment most of the summer to complete.

Mikelbr, you talking about in Erwinville? I don't get to hang out much in the bars....kids keep me too busy, but I often drop in at the drive thru daquari shop across the street from the Erwinville Exxon on my way home from work

Downshift, the 'potato level' is something like 10-12' tall and has kept the forebay dry up to this point. Its purpose is to protect the forebay against minor floods (up to ~37'on BR gage)so that crops will not be destoyed during minor events. The river is already 10'+ higher than the forebay at this time so filling will be rather quick.
