The curves in the river around NOLA are very troublesome. It can lead to a back-up of water and potentially severe scouring of the levee system.

The authorities have put notices on folks houses to evacuate, but cannot force them to do so.
Memphis crest is next Wed so we'll see how bad it is.

I'm finding it hard to get reliable information on what's going on other than from the OT

Correct. Unless there is a breach in a major urban area only really low places will flood. The levees south of St Louis haven't been tested like this this since 1973. If the system holds it is fantastic.

Seriously. This (and the links provided on this thread) is really the only place worth looking at.

That's what I figured out. You would think a major event that will likely affect the entire SE in some way would be a little better documented.

It has been vastly under-reported in my opinion. I'm sure part of it has been offset by the disaster in Alabama (understandably) and Bin Laden's death. But still, this thing has a lot of potential to be enormously catastrophic and it seems like it hasn't received as much media attention. Someone brought up earlier that one reason may be because the media tends to focus in once lives have been lost and major property damage has been caused on a wide scale. It's a shame

But kudos to the OT for raising the bar

Here is the problem. To The Dude's credit, it was in the news.

From the same article.

About 950 households in Memphis and about 135 other homes in Shelby County received the notices,

Yep. The media profits more from acting like it was a big surprise disaster that nobody saw coming like the tornadoes in bama.
