Also, several tons aint shite against a couple million cubic feet per minute of water
They wouldnt even try to close the gates until the water has receeded. Once open they stay open.
The river will not jump at Morganza. There is no channel. It will jump either at ORCS or just to the north of it where the Red and Mississippi are only about 3 miles apart.
They have a map on the corps vicksburg site showing the backwater flooding in Avoylles. I can't link it right now.
Bakersman, I find it entertaining to see you reply to me referencing your dad.

Who told you that? The Mississippi is about 5 ft from being over Hwy 1 right when you head out of Morganza going to Simmesport. Right before the spillway guide levees.

Thats why it is never flowed beyond 30%.
When the ORCS was undermined in 1973, they opened the gates and allowed more than 30% to flow because there is less pressure on the structure when it is allowed to pass water.

If the Morganza Spillway is designed to pass 600 kcfs of flow, does this take into account that most of the floodway is heavy forrested. It seems to me this would decrease the floodways capacity or was this accounted for?
They had gates open yesterday when I crossed it. There wasn't water in the forebay. I just crossed it and all gates are down. The is about 5 ft of water up to the gates now.
Alot will without the fuse plug levee. Alot more will if it is used. Plus they have alot of oil drilling going on in the floodway around Dupont.
Its between hamburg ans Simmesport. Backwater will flood all the back of Bordelonville, Spring Bayou, and Broulliete. It would cross Hwy 1 between Hamburg and Simmesport and follow the river down to past Krotz Springs.
Not saying they wont open it cause they probably will. It will take a few days for the water to fill up the forebay. I think the back levee is like 10' high so if the water is coming over it, it is already all there. It just will take a little time to fill up the forebay. It wont be instant. I know in 97 and 08 the water was up to the the top of the gates. There was alot of activity there that I have never seen before though.
I crossed it this afternoon. Water is coming into the forebay but it is still a good ways away from the structure. They appeared to be doing work to the guide levees on the Morganza side and 2 gates were up. They still had a herd of cattle on the floodway side.

The Low Sill structure at Old river was permentantly damaged in 1973. The auxillary structure was built to take pressure off of it. I supposedly can only maintain a maximum of 22 ft of head between the Mississippi and Atchafalaya. There is a head of 17.8 ft today. I work on the river in Reserve and it is really starting to roll.
