There is a fuse plug levee located between the west guide levee and the west internal levee along the Atchafalaya. To its north lies the great back swamp area; to its south lies the West Atchafalaya Floodway. The Fuse Plug Levee is lower than the adjacent west guide west internal levees. If the water in the back swamp is not contained by all the above steps, then water begins to flow over the fuse plug levee rather than over adjacent levees where it would flood human habitations. Once water begins to flow over the top of the Fuse Plug Levee, it quickly tears it down until it carries a maximum of 250,000 cfs. This is designed to work on its own, but if extremely critical, it can be dynamited. To date, the Fuse Plug Levee has never been needed.

From what i read, this is in Avoyelles Parish... But does anyone know where exactly and what areas of the parish this will directly affect?

Bayou Des Glaises Fuse Plug Levee
8.1 miles of fuse plug levee at the head of the West Atchafalaya Basin Floodway, extending on the right descending bank of the bayou from Hamburg to Simmesport, where it joins the West Atchafalaya River Levee.

quote:I can see it on my DOTD map but it's pretty dang hard to describe. Basically, a nort to south swath with Dupont, Big Can and Palmetto all to the west of the guide levee. AR is the eastern boundary. Krotz Springs is in it, but has a ring levee. Runs right over Henderson and onward south.

Butte LaRose Voluntary Evacuation
The description of what they are asking folks to do before they leave is scary.

Its between hamburg ans Simmesport. Backwater will flood all the back of Bordelonville, Spring Bayou, and Broulliete. It would cross Hwy 1 between Hamburg and Simmesport and follow the river down to past Krotz Springs.

It runs right down the side of Old LA1 west of Simmesport. Holy Cow there are subdivisions in that flood plain.

They said if the river crests as expected then the chemical plants on the west side of the bank are fricked.
Close, I just talked with some on the East side, they too are gonna be in bad shape.

So the fuse plug levee would relieve Avoyelles Parish then? Was this in place in 27?

Dad, what water level stage will they close the river?
Ongoing talks right now.

Do you foresee the river being closed for 2-3 weeks?
The river closure isn't the problem, its the re-opening of the river docks. Remember, most will clear (Evacuate) all product from every lines on these docks. Many get feed stock from Pipeline, but you only have so much storage capability, many plants will cut rates. Only so much can go out by truck, rail, pipeline etc.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that everyone in this general vicinity take as many pictures & video of their property ASAP. Whether you think you will be affected or not if you live anywhere near the Atchafalaya River flood plain you should start documenting your property loss now. If it doesn't flood terrific but if it does you make sure you have documented everything you have on your property so if it is destroyed you can use this information for flood insurance purposes.
Unfortunately this is going to affect several thousands homes & businesses. USACE has a blast zone number but are not releasing it because they don't want to create a political panic.

Alot will without the fuse plug levee. Alot more will if it is used. Plus they have alot of oil drilling going on in the floodway around Dupont.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Coast Guard closed a stretch of the swollen Mississippi to barge traffic Friday in a move that could cause a backup along the mighty river, while police farther south in Memphis went door to door, warning thousands of people to leave before they get swamped.

Now if you have never felt an earthquake in your life. Be near here when they open these gates.
i think you are overestimating personally
these gates are operated by a gantry crane and are opened one by one
i have a feeling thats why they have begun to open them, its probably going to take a while to open them if they do plan to open 100
I would very interested to watch it happen none the less.
BTW, i travel through this area quite a bit and the forebay has filled a few times in my lifetime. It does become a pretty large lake and last time it flooded you could see about 3 pitblinds that floated to the one corner where the current carried them along with a lot of driftwood.
