Wife and I are seriously considering a trip in Feb. There’s a cheap non stop from Houston. We would bring our two kids (2 and 5). Any recommendations on best places/areas to stay and things to do would be appreciated.

Go white water rafting on the Rio Reventazon. It is a blast. The rapids are rough enough to be exciting but not overly dangerous.

Depends what you want. A resort, a small full-service town, an eco-tourist enclave, a surfing community…

I like flying into Liberia and staying in Guanacaste but if the cheap flight is into San Jose, you have Jaco close by. Stay on the Pacific side of the country.

Costa Rica is the safest most friendly places i've been. flew into liberia and rented a car to our resort. Ended up keeping the car and driving around to different places up and down the north pacific side.. Everywhere we stopped had interesting things to do and great/cheap food.

If Beach, you can head to Los Suenos/Jaco area because it's close to the airport (2 hours) and if you want something different and totally cool go to La Fortuna and do the hot springs. Also, San Jose itself is seriously under-rated.

If the price for Four Seasons is doable, i would highly recommend. Took our kids when they were around that age - they loved the kids club.

Kids are now teenagers - we've gone back a couple of other times over the years - still their favorite vacation destination.

Highly recommend the Arenal volcano area. We rented a car and hopped around the country. Arenal was really beautiful though. Chilled out in the hot springs. Also, zip lining in the Monteverde cloud forest. Fished out of the Quepos area. Dominical was a really neat little town on the coast. We never did the Nicoya peninsula, so I can't speak to it myself, but I know a lot of people like Tamarindo. The whole country is beautiful, so you can't really go wrong, and the people are really friendly. Pura Vida!

Research Montezuma and the waterfalls out of town. Cabo Blanco is beautiful and Mal Pais is a surfer heaven.

Rent a car go to Arenal, stay there a couple of days then head down to Montezuma (stay in a beautiful eco-resort)…few days there then back up to Tamarindo so you’re close to the airport. Make sure you verify the rroads are open if you’re going to take the coast up.

We went to Costa Rica last January for the first time. It was awesome. I ended up booking the trip through their own travel agency and I highly recommend using them. Very easy to use and they were very responsive. I booked some excursions through them and some on my own. I checked around once I got there and found their prices were on par with what I would have gotten on my own.

At worst you can check out the site and they will set up a sample itinerary. They had us picked up from the airport snd travel was arranged for us every day we were there.

We just took our family to to RIU Guanacaste. Three kids 12/9/6 and we had a great time. We found a tour operator that works on the beach who was much better than the group that works out of the hotel. We would go back in a second.

I think manuel antonio(beach), monteverde(cloud forest), and arenal(volcano) is a great trip that gives you 3 different sceneries easily done in a week or so.

monteverde is my favorite spot in costa rica.

Following. Looking into a Caribbean trip as well. Wife really wants all-inclusive but I’d prefer to hop around with a rental car.

My wife and I have been twice. Our first trip was to Mal Pais. We stayed at Casa Chameleon which was owned by one of the original Baywatch girls. She was there and we had a nice visit with her. To the south is Montezuma which was great. Very near Mal Pais is Santa Teresa. It is a fine place. We rented a car and drove everywhere. We flew into San Jose and took a commuter airline into Tambor where we picked up our rental car. The second trip was to Jaco. It is more developed and maybe a little more to do. We rode horses in the mountains and rented a side by side ATV one day. We thoroughly enjoyed it there but preferred Mal Pais.

went out to Tamarindo for a wedding earlier this year. Stayed at a beautiful little bnb.

Fantastic experience out there. Would return.
