Just picked up $21.57 worth of materials at Home Depot. Should I have just walked out?

It’s one hand-sized box of connectors. Without it I can’t finish the job I’m doing, won’t get paid and my family can’t eat.
While I am waiting on the self checkout machine to finish the transaction, these thoughts keep going through my mind.
I really am stupid for playing by the rules.

Laws shouldn’t be the reason why you choose to have a strong morality. It’s got to come from within and what you stand for.

I mean, it would cost you a hell of alot more than $21.57 if you got caught and they decided to prosecute.

My self checkout rule.....
If it doesn't scan after I've tried 10 times and no one is around to help, it just goes in the bag. At least for things that are like $5 and under. I'm not going in with the intention to steal, but I'm not waiting around forever after I already have to do this shite myself.

They won't even do anything. Store associates are trained not to pursue a thief. Loss prevention budgets are in place for that sort of thing.
With that being said, thanks for contributing to my salary raise baw.

I’m pretty sure almost every transaction at the Home Depot self checkouts involve some form of theft

You want the reward which is greater than the loss to play the game.
Basically, getting paid is worth more than walking out without connectors. You play the game.
Animal wants food.
He hunts or waits for another or animals to kill its prey.
Then the animal eats its prey as the reward versus sitting on his butt not eating.

You put the connectors in an electrical box that cost a dollar

What state....if California you have 928.00 to go.

Why didnt you just do an unplanned deposit into your truck?

Can’t believe such an ignorant question was asked then I remembered it was the OT.

We picked up some cabinet handles for some furniture we were redoing a couple of weeks ago and apparently my wife forgot to scan one. Wanted to go back in and scan it, I told her it wasn't worth the effort to stand in line for another 10 minutes. If Lowes felt that strongly about it, they wouldn't have self checkout.

A Home Depot employee will not try to stop you. I was told they let you walk out and may check the video camera and report the theft but, if not a large, costly item, they will do nothing. They write it off and prices for items go up. Either way someone pays for it or we all pay for it.

It appears many have failed to grasp the facetious nature of your question. Regarding California, don’t think the effects of the “$950 rule” will only impact them. Insurance for theft and prices will have to increase nationwide to make up for the losses and potential losses as this nonsense will spread.
