I use to tutor math and you'd be shocked. It's an indictment on our public education system

I agree, if people as stupid as you are trusted as tutors, we're fricked

Nowadays, they ignore that knowledge base and go directly to computational strategies we olds have done in our heads for a long time. Works for us because we have the base knowledge, doesn't work for today's kids because it's just a bunch of gobblygook.

That plus the kids get the strategies confused because they don't understand when to use each one.

60% of public school students scored below grade level on math in 2019. To put it into prespective, that's almost half.

Dude, have you never seen the OT tackle a PEMDAS thread?

Monkeys could do as well as the idiots around here.

Of course I also have a number of attorney clients that don't understand basic math as well, or perhaps they think they can argue it...

The alternative to fractions is decimals.

You have to carry the decimals out to six places (e.g. .128438). I have had parties get really confused over decimal interests.

I use fractions but switch to using decimals when the interests are very small (e.g. 1/2756).

I aced the LSAT (and taught LSAT classes for Kaplan when I was in law school).

A couple of years ago, I tried to answer some sample LSAT questions. I did not do well. Standardized testing is a young person's game.

English system of measurement

What is the English system of measurement? I've heard of the Imperial system, which is used in the US, and the Metric system used most other places.

The Metric system is for people that are too stupid or too lazy to do the math.

Go back and read the comments from posters on the thread about ~1/5 college students expecting to earn $85k out of college. It's prevalent here too.

Send Sam two cakes, one cut into 40 slices and the other cut into 160 slices and ask him which slice he would prefer.

And yet, here we are still using the English system of measurement in our everyday functions in life. Should have been completely changed over years ago.
