I am surprised at how many people do not understand basic math.
I'm appointed on a court case to administer a settlement involving a large number of heirs. Each of the heirs will receive a fractional interest in the property based upon Louisiana intestate succession laws.

I sent out a table that lists the fractional interest of each heir. Joe had a 1/10 interest in the property. Joe died. Joe had four children, each of whom would have a 1/40 interest in the property (1/10 split four ways). Mary, one of Joe's children, died leaving four children. Each of those children now have a 1/160 interest in the property (1/40 split four ways).

So, Sam, one of Joe's living children, calls the office, mad as hell. "Why do Mary's kids each get 1/160th of the property but I only get 1/40th?"

After a long discussion, he still does not understand that 1/40 is a larger number than 1/160.

I sent a letter, with examples, explaining the division.

This is by no means the first time this has happened.

There is no excuse for anyone over 12 to not have an understanding of how basic math works.

60% of public school students scored below grade level on math in 2019. To put it into prespective, that's almost half.

Bruh, if he wants 1/160, give him 1/160.

You should round down the % and take the leftover cut for yourself.

Use percentages. Everyone knows 2.5% is more than 0.625%.

This is totally understandable if you have ever seen a young person working in a retail outlet struggle to make change.

I can prove that 10 + 10 = the same as 11 + 11

Calculators have replaced the need to know these basic functions with math. There was a time when everyone was taught the multiplication tables to twelve. Just use your phone now.

Call him back and say Mary's kid's are going to get 1 / 160th, but you are secretly going to get him 4 / 160ths.

Lady cutting my hair asked me what is 10% of 225. I quickly gave her the answer and her mind was blown. She was hot thought, I’d rather her blow me.
