why not just use percentages?

In many cases, I will use decimal interests. I also prepare charts with both decimal and fractional interests.

I had to print out a first grade math slide a few years ago to illustrate to an adult that 1/3 is not the same as 30%.

I tried a case involving unpaid commissions in federal court. We had a six person jury. There was no alternate juror. The only issue was how much money the man was owed in commissions. Everyone agreed he was owed commissions.

Six person jury sends out a note: "Your honor, we are hung 4 to 3." The Judge, who had a good sense of humor, asked for our suggestions as to how he should respond to the note. Plaintiff's lawyer says "if this is the kind of math this group does, we should probably settle right now." The Judge laughed and in ten minutes we had the case resolved.

Calculators have replaced the need to know these basic functions with math. There was a time when everyone was taught the multiplication tables to twelve. Just use your phone now.

And when the calculator returns a wrong answer because they fat fingered something, they have no clue.

Lady cutting my hair asked me what is 10% of 225. I quickly gave her the answer and her mind was blown. She was hot thought, I’d rather her blow me.

My awfully sweet and pretty girlfriend can't do this either. She's 33.

Tipping calculation opinions aside....

I tried to teach her how I tip.
But she can't look at a bill of $52.60 and immediately figure out that 10% is $5.26.

Meanwhile, I look at the bill and tip $11 within a few seconds and knowing I'm tipping just over 20%.

I have had to use the example of a pizza. 1/4 means 4 slices, 1/10 means 10 slices. It usually, but not always, works.

Call the guy back up and refer him to the OT lounge for back up, we could have a little fun with this.

I use to tutor math and you'd be shocked. It's an indictment on our public education system that values graduation over actual learning. Problem is in many cases these kids are such a problem it's hard to blame the teachers for "graduating" them just to rid themselves of the Neverending headache.

You should have just converted it to percentages for him, although with this level of division the decimals and leading zeroes might get tricky for him.

And yet, here we are still using the English system of measurement in our everyday functions in life. Should have been completely changed over years ago.

You may be upset, you may be concerned, but you cannot possibly be surprised.

Just remember how stupid the average person is... and then remember half the population is dumber than that!

I've used the "pizza" example to explain fractions to my kids. It works well.

Of course I also have a number of attorney clients that don't understand basic math as well, or perhaps they think they can argue it...

Because they don't work near as much on memorization as they did back in the day in elementary school. In the 80's and earlier, even most subpar students could nail most of their multiplication tables, add/subtract in their heads, etc.

Nowadays, they ignore that knowledge base and go directly to computational strategies we olds have done in our heads for a long time. Works for us because we have the base knowledge, doesn't work for today's kids because it's just a bunch of gobblygook.

I think there's also some "use it or lose it" going on. Even playing darts with friends can really expose how bad at math some of my friends and family are.
