I'm more worried about the embarrassment of letting out a loud girly scream seeing one swim near me, then it actually attacking me.

I won't even go in on yellow flag. shite even blue or whatever color it is for best conditions I'll maybe go waist deep and then spend the entire time yelling at my kids to get closer to shore. I have to get a little drunk to relax at the beach. Otherwise all I worry about is riptide or sharks Not too drunk, just a buzz.

If you are that nervous about the beach, take the long trip to South Padre Island. It is a very docile beach. There are a series of sand bars and I've never seen any rip current there.

you ever went out on gulf state pier in orange beach?

I would imagine you’re more likely to see sharks there due to the fishing activity than you are just swimming in front of a condo/beach house. Obviously, they can be anywhere in that water, but being on a pier with a lot of fishing activity increases the likelihood of one seeing them.

i guess encounter in and of itself is pretty vague. Is a shark swimming 25 yards from you an ecounter?

This is why we used to just go to ms when we were really little. Low tide its just flat with little puddles every where.

I was mostly just being goofy posting that. I relax and have fun on the beach. We go every other year and have a good time. I do make kids stay in knee deep if yellow flags are out.

People are so fricking stupid. If the flag is red and you go in anyway, sorry but you should forfeit your right to be rescued. Dumbasses are dying and killing rescuers every year.

I learned this lesson last year in Santa Rosa. Went in with double red flags because I'm an a-hole and assumed I'd be okay. I really love swimming in the ocean. It took me 40 minutes to get back to shore... legitimately thought I was going to drown. I was bummed out that I wasn't going to make my dinner reservation at Cafe Tango that night.

cop knocked on our door today looking for eye witnesses. All we saw was the deputy who died hauling arse in his truck, to the beach, and then the aftermath of numerous other vehicles.

My wife and I witnessed a drowning at my dad's house on Tybee a couple years ago though. Had to give deposition testimony in civil matter, plus our police reports. That one was equally preventable and sad outcome with young child left fatherless.

Don't f around with water.

In my opinion, a shark going about its business several yards away would not be an encounter.

This thread has jumped the shark, let’s get back on topic of the unfortunate incident.

Yeah when the kids were younger it was hard for me to relax while at the beach unless it was totally calm. We have teenagers now but I will still look up conditions and give them the talk when we head to the beach.

It's sad how often this stuff happens. I think last summer there were three or four drownings down in Grand Isle over a three week period.

I shook the hands of 2 Sheriffs deputies today that came in. Told them we were praying for Bill and the whole department and if they needed anything from me, don’t hesitate to ask.

I recall the correct move is to drop down underwater and surface a little ways away. The person drowning, if they are still conscious, may be panicking and trying to climb on top of whatever they can get their hands on. Letting them push you down underwater means they’ll let you go to stay above water. Otherwise, you’ll be grappling at the surface with someone already fully charged with adrenaline and that isn’t going to be a good match up for you. I wonder how much lifeguarding training is given to deputies in beach towns or if he just rolled out into the water and hoped for the best.

Excuse me,,,,, how could you say something like that? You are always should help a person in need. What if this is one of your family members. Would you someone else to say I don’t know them so let em be. You are an arse.

Sad for that deputy and his family, but he did take the oath to protect the citizens he serves, even if it meant putting his own life on the line.

After his family's grief, they should be able to recognize he is a true hero. I know I view him as one.

I understand that feeling. We are in Gulf Shores with a 8year old and a 6 year old. Today is the first time they've both been out in the surf with no floatation devices since they both know how to swim now. Even though it's only yellow flag today with pretty calm surf, the undertow is no joke. I certainly had my head on a swivel today.

If you don't have the proper equipment there will be two dead bodies not just one.

We watched the shite go down. fricking terrible. They just trained those deputies in water rescue recently. We saw the deputy who died come hauling arse to the beach in a pickup, followed by numerous fire and rescue vehicles.

Man that sucks. Those people will be in debt to his family for the rest of their lives.

There will always be idiots who are going to do what they are not supposed to be doing and in this case it has cost a man the ultimate price.
