Well, it’s finally here...

I visited Heym’s proving grounds in Dallas back in August to get sized up for a custom double rifle. After firing the 88 and 89B models in a few calibers we decided on the lighter frame model 89B in 450/400 Nitro Express.

The 89B features more English styling. Anson & Deeley boxlock with a Greener crossbolt and Purdey underbite. Intercepting sears to prevent doubling. Considered by many to be one of the strongest actions available. Stock designed by Ralf Martini.

Once the gun is chosen, it’s back to the shop to get measured up. Everything is measured. Arm length, trigger finger length, palm size, length of pull, etc. After that you get to choose your lumber.

I did choose to dress it up a little from the factory settings. I’m a southpaw so it’s lefty.

My options...

Left handed stock.
Left handed trigger group and firing order.
Upgraded lumber.
Grade II engraving.
Silver nitrate triggers, trigger guard and butt cap.
English style oil finish on the stock instead of matte finish.
Bullino engraved Cape Buffalo underneath.

Hope to get it to the range to check the regulation this weekend. With a bit of luck I’ll have it pointing at Buffs later this month.

Niiiceeeeeeeee

Interesting caliber choice. Beautiful lumber.

I cant get over the machine work. The fitment on those things is incredible compared to your average off the shelf rifle. I love how the screws dissappear when its closed

Once they got all of your measurements and custom selections, how long did it take them to build it?

That's not nearly my style, but damn I can appreciate that's a beautiful rifle. That buffalo on the bottom of the receiver is sick.

Beautiful gun. Each barrel is a different caliber? What's the purpose of that?

I imagine they are different because after you shoot the first shot you are so bellrung you need a little mercy.

About 7 months from order to completion. We dealt with some delays in shipping and customs which added another 2 months.

Both the same; but, I see in the photo why you’d ask. Weird...

Interesting caliber choice

I went with 450/400 for a few reasons...

The biggest is my belief that you should only get as large of a cartridge as you can effectively handle. As a hunter, I’d rather a well placed 450/400 than a poorly placed 500.

I could handle the 470 Nitro Express pretty well. Recoil is tough; but, manageable. The 500 is just extremely unpleasant.

The 450/400 was easy to roll with between shots and the 40 caliber bullet delivers really good sectional density. Accepting that I don’t see myself hunting elephant; it’s plenty of gun for my purposes.

The other part is nostalgia. I wanted to use a historic cartridge like I read about when I was a kid in Sporting Times, Sports Afield and Petersens Hunting. The 450/400 aka 400 Jeffery was hugely popular and the preferred double cartridge for some legendary hunters like Pondoro Taylor, Jim Corbett, and the preferred gun of the Maharajahs hunting tigers.

It really wasn’t until the bolt action rifle arrived that its popularity waned along with all doubles.

Good deal. I love the caliber choice and the whole package in general. You definitely don't want your prized rifle to not be fun to shoot.

Go shoot a dugga and when you get back, shoot a deer! I'd definitely deer hunt with it every chance I could.

Gotcha. You also said 400/450 nitro. Didn't know if that was one caliber or two lol

Obviously beautiful. Curious, what did it set you back? I’m guessing north of $20k......

I think you should follow up with a test drive of your new Freeman 42 next. I kid;)
