You also said 400/450 nitro. Didn't know if that was one caliber or two
The 450/400 Nitro Express is a 450NE (45cal) necked down to 400 (40cal). An early wildcat round.
It’s considered in the middle range of the rimmed big bores. Bigger than 375H&H it allows you to push 400gr bullets. From a practical standpoint; the biggest of the big bores are the 470’s and 500’s. The 470 is quite popular. The only persons carrying these 500’s are PH’s (African Outfitters) who are willing to tolerate the punishment for a “stopping rifle”.
There are 577 and 600’s too. Early black powder cartridges which are pretty much obsolete now.
In short, the 450/400 is well suited for just about any African game; but, probably considered by most to be a bit small for elephant.

Pretty cool, thanks for explaining.

That is a beautiful rifle!!!
That first pic reminds me of a gun one of my uncles brought back from Germany after WWII. It was a rifle in one barrel and a shotgun in the other. Which reminds me, I need to go see that aunt....

Thanks for sharing the pictures. That's very impressive. Have seen some of those big game rifles on display at Cabelas in Dallas. Only other times was when watching Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom or a movie like King Solomon's Mines.
Stewart Granger really did that kind of hunting and the rifle in the above picture was real.

There's a nice color picture of his broken down Wesley Richards 577 White Hunter model in the article.

August 14, 2013 STEWART GRANGER and his .577's Stewart Granger had 2 Westley Richards 577's. The rifle shown above was made originally in 1923 for Count Alfred Potocki whose uncle Joseph, was author of the very rare and desirable book 'Sport in Somaliland'. The rifle in the picture with Granger is a 577 'White Hunter' model which he bought from us on his completion of filming King Solomon's Mines. The gold inlaid animal heads which were inlaid at Granger's request represent the game he shot during his trips to Africa, the c represented 'charged'!

What are you shooting with this?

That rifle should come with its own car and driver.

Damn, does that thing also function as a .410 shotgun?

Will be taking the gun to South Africa later this month. Cape buffalo is the primary target. If opportunity presents itself we’ll use it for others too.

Congratulations on a fine rifle. I have been blessed enough to hunt many times throughout the Cape (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia).
I carried a Butch Searcy double rifle, with two sets of barrels chambered in 375 flanged magnum and 470 NE. I still own a 416 Rigby bolt action that I had him make for me with a Mauser action.
May you find yourself downwind of the prey you seek!

Great looking rifle. I’m sure you will enjoy many years of good service out of it. A nice double in .416 Rigby is one of the last few on my list. Hopefully I can punch the ticket soon.

While you were there, did you fondle any express rifles? A big bore Heym express has always been something I wanted to handle.

I’ve got 3 or 4 of those but all mine have black butt pads. I’m going to have to get one with a red one. Looks good

I did, and it’s a sexy beast. Unfortunately for me; it’s only available in a right handed action.
I also really loved the SR30 with the straight pull. Fired one in 300 WM and I’ve never seen a gun outside of a semiautomatic that reloads so effortlessly.
It’s available as a lefty and I’m thinking of having one built. That darn wooden ball bolt handle just looks hideous though. LOL
