I’ve officially hired someone to start cutting my grass, I feel like a punk sell out but God damn is hot and I’m not feeling it anymore. To be fair I use a push mower, ok self, propelled whatever, not a fancy side by side

Is this a natural part of becoming an old fart, my grandpa is almost 90 And still cut his own grass. I’m almost 40 , generation of 9ussies I guess.

Bunch of wussies!!
84 years old w/ two places to mow. 3 acres to mow on one and 4.5 on the other. Both include adjacent roadsides and waterways. Grasshopper 729 w/61" deck. Do it when it is cooler and after sunset if necessary.
I stack double blades at 90 degrees to get more throw of the cut grass. Newer blade on top of sharp used blade on bottom. Works great.

I did the same 8 years ago. My free time is worth $30 a week.

If I actually ENJOYED yard work, I'd save my money. But I don't. I'd rather go on a bike ride or fishing.

I own a 725D.

Great idea. How are you stacking the blades to keep them from rotating into each other? Which model blade are you using?

Thanks.

I use the high lift blades rather than the flatter ones for the bagger model.
I am simply stacking them and tightening them in place. Initially I welded pieces of 5/16" keystock to the top blade to keep them from turning against one another but then when I replaced blades with newer ones I failed to continue the practice. Unless you hit a large tree limb or other object they will not rotate to hit each other and if they do I just reset them when I wash out the underside of the deck. My mower mulches the clippings more this way and throws them a long ways away over a broad pattern. My ditches and waterways grow faster than the lawn as they are primarily brome grass and it gets taller, but is no problem to cut at "highway travel" speed since the grass clippings don't stay around long enough to cause problems. The 725 is a great mower but the extra 4hp in the 729 really helps especially in brome grass at 18" or taller.

Tell your grandpa that you’ve hired a Mexican to cut your grass because it’s too hot for you and report back to us.

My dad is retired so he cuts grass (I’m sure to get out of house away from my mom )

He cuts 3 cemeteries and a couple of yards. Has 3 zero turn mowers but he does use round up instead of weed eating.

I sold out when my kids were very little so I could spend more time away from work focused on them. Everything was fine but there were a couple of things that were drawbacks. First, when it started to cool down in the Fall, the guy put down rye grass at no charge so he could keep cutting through the winter. Also, all of those guys use blowers and blow leaves and clippings into the street. Personally, that seems lazy but for what little I paid, I could understand.

One good thing is that the guy was a good resource for finding handymen for other specialty work like stonework or brickwork. He knew that if his referred person screwed up, his job was at stake.

Kids got older and I’m back at it myself. Very satisfying.

The hour it takes to mow the lawn is one of the more enjoyable hours of my week.

Listen to a game, nobody bothers me, immediate reward in a good looking lawn.

I cut grass 6 days a week when I was younger for about 6 years. All push mow, old school push mow too. I haven’t owned a mower since then.

I actually enjoy it. I roll up a couple of doobs and listen to Jason Boland. I have noticed that it used to be a 2.5 hour job but has turned in to 3.5.

Taking it easy on my mower is my explanation.

Agree. I’m not judging any of you baws, but I can cut, edge, weedeat, and blow off my front/side yard in about 70-80 minutes. But I also realize some of you may not live in a subdivision like me. I’d be more inclined to sub it out if I had to cut a few acres, for sure.

I think everyone should teach their kids - sons and daughters too - the basics of maintaining their lawn. Some valuable life skills and lessons learned there.

I grew up cutting several acres for my parents. My own postage stamp yard takes no time, but I grew to hate that shite. I also disliked having to consider when I could fit It in when the weather was good, the game wasn’t on, we weren’t committed to an event, etc.

For years, I have had a guy who mows, rakes, etc. as needed, and he bills me monthly. I never complain about paying him.

Retirement is the only way I would consider doing it again.
