We have some that we keep at home but never thought to bring them out to a restaurant. We had dinner last night at a sushi restaurant and a couple next to us brought their on chopsticks that they took out of a wooden box.

They looked expensive..... and bringing your own is probably a good idea during these times..

This might be the most pretentious thing I have ever heard.

No, i also don't bring my own silverware to restaurants either. That's just strange.

Why? Even if you are a masked covidian, chopsticks are usually pre-wrapped. If you are worried about the utensils, then you should definitely be worried about the food being prepared and sent to you.

We've spent some time in Japan, and each have a pair of custom chopsticks, but they are for in-home use only. I can't imagine taking them out to a restaurant, that would be weird.

Actually this is kind of an interesting situation. Most American restaurants have reusable silverware. If you go to a nice place, they usually have a good knife for a steak, soup spoon, etc., so you are getting good utensils to use.

Most Japanese places Just give you the wooden, throwaway ones. I can see people wanting to use a better quality reusable set they can bring.

Would people bring their own utensils to American restaurants if they have you plastic utensils?

I'm picturing a couple of people wearing scarves with short sleeve shirts, black rimmed glasses, and over-groomed mustaches.

As opposed to the individually wrapped wooden ones?

I have my own, but don’t take them anywhere. People might expect me to be an expert at using them. I’m not!

I have expanded their usage from just eating utensils to tools when I’m cooking, like turning shrimp over in the sauté pan, etc.

I sat next to a couple at the sushi bar one time who had their own. I struck up a convo with them as they were also wearing leather vests and well they brought their own chopsticks that were in little cases. Their thing was to ride their motorcycle around and go to different sushi restaurants... Probably had one of those 3 wheel bikes with a little trailer on it too. To each their own I guess.

Why? They’re packaged in paper. Now we have to worry about items packaged in paper being contaminated? FFS

shite no man. You’d get your arse kicked at Nakazawa if you pulled something like that.

Telling an Asian restaurant that you think your personal utensils are better than theirs is incredibly insulting. Many owners would consider suicide.

I have my own chopsticks. Got them at the Japan section of Epcot at Disney World. I am having a hard time determining if this is pretentious or trashy.
