North/south divide in England vs America: English friend says England gap is wider

He has lived in America for 20+ years and says the “divide” (cultural, economic, political, etc) between the north and south of England is way wider than the divide between northern and southern US states.
For those who have traveled around enough to see most of England and most of America, do you agree?
At first glance, I’d argue america has the starker regional divide, but idk.
ETA; for clarification.....NOT referring to Scotland. Strictly England

In both cases, wars have been fought over those divisions. I’d say the argument has merit.
I’d like to know if Northern English (Manchester, Liverpool, York, etc) are hated by Londoners as much as southerners are hated by New Yorkers.

It's been a few years, but I'd agree with that.
Don't forget you have the England/Scotland divide as well.

There's a definite divide in Germany too - Bavaria vs. north.

The Scots are very different people from the Brits. A person living within an hour or so from Atlanta probably has more in common with someone who lives in NYC than a guy who lives in Glasgow does with someone from London.

Is he referring to Scotland in the North, or just the Northern part of what is actually considered England?

Lots of racism up north in America

America's cultural gap is much bigger IMO.
The divide in north/south in England is very real, especially on class and perceptions of class. On politics the divide can be big too, but it's within the microcosm of UK politics. IMO you don't have anything as huge as a US southerners with an arsenal vs. US northerners who would call 911 if they saw a gun on someone's hip.
There also is nothing remotely on par with the difference between lily-white portions of the US north and the heavily black portions of the US South when it comes to differing cultures.

Catholics v Protestants among many other things.
Bavaria is a lot like Texas in that they think of themselves as Bavarians first then Germans...maybe.

I'm sure he's talking about Manchester/Liverpool/etc. vs. London

That's what I assumed. Yeah I agree with your points, while there is a big divide from what I understand, I don't think it is the cultural divide of the US.

In England it’s more the crappier inner cities/poor areas vs higher income or smarter folks.
A recent study there was released showing Asians & Blacks in some (mostly) urban areas of England were more likely to attend college than were whites.
PS: Whether in England, anywhere else in the UK, the US, or universe-wide:

Does the one with the bigger gap win a prize?

I don't think it is between north and south as much as it is coastal elites vs everyone in flyover country

Keep in mind they are basically the size of states. Neither mean much in the grand scale of things. We should just annex them and Canada.

If you’re from the south and spend any amount of time outside of the south, you’ll quickly realize that even non-southerners in flyover country look down on the south and have a natural distrust of southerners as well as assume anyone with a southern accent is stupid. Southerners really are viewed by a substantial percentage pf the population in America as almost sub-human, sorta second-class citizens.

Is that any different than what’s going on here but with race involved?
I’d consider myself classist for the simple reason that I can’t bring myself to respect anyone who doesn’t take a step forward and try to improve their life. I’ve always had a really hard time believing that any American, black or white or green or yellow or blue, is stuck in their lifestyle, be it the ghetto or trailer park. There’s literally nothing holding them back from taking a step forward and leaving their situation.
