The Scots ARE Brits. I think you mean that the Scots are very different from the English. Britain is made up of four nations: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

If I recall correctly, this is because of the absolutely massive unemployment and general disastrous economy in the North during that time, right?

Coal and steel. These were the heavily unionized areas, and Thatcher, wisely imo, broke the unions. The unions were out of control in the ‘70s.

Nice to see there are people who have been on here longer that have fewer posts than me.

I've never really been up north but aren't different races a lot more intertwined in the south?

Northern cities tend to have less blacks, but more other minorities overall (hispanic, east asian, south asian, african, middle eastern, recent European immigrants, etc), and the black neighborhoods tend to be much more effectively segregated from the white neighborhoods. However, northern rural areas are almost 100% white. Out west, there’s a lot of Hispanics in the rural areas.

In the South, the rural areas are blacker than northern urban areas. Neighborhoods are more checkerboard and less obviously segregated, though ritzy suburbs are still distinct. As a result, blacks are a much larger percentage of the general population in the south, tend to be majority populations in most cities, and tend to live lives intertwined with white populations. Even in those alleged segregated suburbs, whites and blacks still go to the same schools, play in the same sports leagues, eat at the same restaurants, etc. The only institutions that are still even a little bit de facto segregated are college campus greek organizations, churches (though many congregations are diverse), barber shops (because different techniques are required to cut different kinds of hair), and some private schools k-12 schools.

As a result, Southerner whites have to live lives intermixed with blacks whereas many northern whites almost never encounter blacks in their every day lives until near adulthood.

I think a few people have hit it on the bed dam ready but I’ll reiterate:

America isn’t a north south divide. It’s a big city vs everywhere else divide. Family outside Buffalo NY is the same culturally as all my family in Louisiana minus the accent differences.

This map tells you all you need to k ow about how the big cities share nothing with the rest of this nation

Obviously, it's not perfect, but if we assume the country is roughly split 50/50 politically,
isn't it safe to say it's closer to 55-45 or 60-40 based on the last couple elections (and shifting demographics), especially considering voter turnout by age?

i agree with what you're saying though. not trying to nitpick.

Southerners are some of the few remaining groups for which it’s still PC to stereotype and make fun of. TDS hasn’t helped things over the last 5 years or so.

I had a very eye opening experience a few years back.

I was in Vegas at a convention and my crew was getting plastered at the Cosmopolitan. I was one of the few sober ones. A bachelorette party rolls through and my crew starts buying them drinks. One girls kinda hangs back from the boisterous group and we talk for a bit. You could tell she was a raging liberal from the first appearance (obviously I’m stereotyping, but she literally looked like the yelling Mizzou professor.)

They’re from NYC and she figures out that I’m southern from the accent and politeness and rudely point blank asks “how did Trump fool you people into voting for him?” I didn’t vote for him in 2016 but was glad he won out of the two options. I got through a litany of reasons why Trump was a better option for the country including markets, foreign policy, culture, trade, etc. I didn’t vote for him that time but I understand why people did.

She let me go on for about 2 or 3 minutes and said “I had no idea that southerners understood any of those things or could even articulate a reason other than God and owning the libs. Hearing a southerner talk about markets and foreign policy with an understanding of how they work is the weirdest thing.”

We had a good talk as the rest of her party got hit on for an hour. She said “you completely changed my view of southerners. Don’t agree with you guys voting for Trump, but thank you for changing my opinion.”

Just an anecdote, but it was an interesting experience.

One exception (although maybe not anymore because American pride is on the rocks too) would be that Thatcher-era England led to some of the northern cities basically disavowing being English at all. A lot of them won't root for the national teams or engage in other "English pride" things because of it

I’m a very big Liverpool soccer fan and it is very common to see the mindset of “We’re Scouse not English” around the fan base. Pretty sure in the past not many of them rooted for the England national team but I get the vibe that’s kinda changed lately with the younger core of the National team (and the fact that Liverpool has some players on it )

Something else that is strange is Ebonics doesn't exist in Canada or the UK.

It does. It's just the whites that speak it. Cockney slang is the term. It's hilarious when you hear it.

I’m foreign born person that lives in the South and even I kind of agree with him. I won’t go as far as saying people view Southerners as “subhuman” or whatever. But it’s the one area of the country where people gladly look down at and make fun of. In my experience, even foreigners that know something about the US, think really low of the South. I don’t have the slightest hint of a southern accent but I know some people automatically view people with southern accents as dumb, racist hicks.

Yep... Their physiques are different as well. Prototypical German is tall and lanky. Bavarians are stout, broader and more muscular. Bavarians view the Germans as twats.

There’s no north-south divide in America. It’s urban/rural, with burbs in between.

do you agree?

No. There is a stark contrast between North and South, but the English are more tribal than we are here in the states, regardless of where someone is from. I think that causes them to overstate the actual differences between people who live in a country that's equivalent in size to Alabama.

For instance, Sunderland and Newcastle are both in Tyne & Wear and they hate each other. Greater Manchester borders Yorkshire and they hate each other. Norfolk and Suffolk are both in the East Anglia region and they hate each other. Portsmouth and Southampton are both in Hampshire and they hate each other. The fiercest rivalries in England are fueled by history and sport, not geography.
