Makes you wonder if he was really that good, or did he just look good against freshman competition.
I know it is hard for some of you to believe that a 6’5 1/2“ white guy could cross your arse over and passed better than Magic and everyone else that ever played or shoot better than Steph Curry, but he was all that and so much more. He shot 45% from everywhere in the freaking gym including well beyond the 3 pt line. Additionally, there was no shot clock, no 3 pt line, etc. He would have averaged 55 with a 3 point line...
He still holds the record for the most points scored against 5 or 6 SEC opponents...

Kind of like how he wasn’t good against African Americans?
His first 3 games as a “Soph”...
he scored 48, 42 and 51 his first 3 games.. there are some seriously funny people on here.

Maravich holds nearly every major NCAA scoring record, including most career points (3,667), highest career scoring average (44.2 ppg), most field goals made (1,387) and attempted (3,166), and most career 50-point games (28). And he accomplished all this without the benefit of the 3-point basket, which wasn’t introduced into the college game until the 1986-87 season.

:rotflmao:

If y’all think CJ was great, get some perspective... Those are the top four single-game scoring performances in LSU history. He holds seven of the program's top nine single-game marks, plus he's tied for 10th with 55 points in a game. LSU guard Chris Jackson reached 55 points on one occasion; Maravich did it six time
Oh yeah all you bull shitters about his scoring. Three seasons:

Fourth in LSU history in career assist average: 5.12 assists per game

Brady brought a small camera that Saturday, one of those then-trendy models with the flash cube on top that rotated with each exposure. Tied with Robertson’s record, Maravich came down and missed five straight shots on five straight possessions.

“I never saw him do that in my life,” Borne said. “Then he hit the sixth one, an 18-foot jump shot.”

By that time, the flash cube on Brady’s camera had nothing left.

“We were out of flash bulbs,” Brady recalled with a smile. “But it was something I’ll never forget.”

Reporters and cameramen, many from across the country, rushed the court after Maravich’s record-breaking shot went down. He amazingly did a brief on-court interview then went back to business. He ended up with 53 points on (get this) 21-of-46 shooting.

Even more remarkable: Maravich dished out 12 assists that night. And his 53-point effort doesn’t even rank among his top 14 single-game efforts.

Actually, I don't think CJ was great, I know he was great. So great, that he's the second best to ever play at LSU. But, behind Pistol. No need to lessen what CJ was to acknowledge how great Pete was.

Pistol was the greatest, CJ was the best since, and no one is close to those 2.

Cam isn’t close.

Man - I’m going with Pettit as second on that list. Remember him also. He could flat out score and not just either his back to the goal. He could shoot. He isn’t too 50 for no reason.
I remember reading about his pro career. But in college, he took LSU to a final 4...
He was GREAT.
Shaq was awesome as well for a couple seasons.

CJ was awesome and as a season ticket holder living in BR then, I never missed a game. Loved watching him.

This current generation and pretty much all of those that didn’t see CJ play will never appreciate just how great of a player he was, especially for a Freshman.

That's a fact.
Maravich, CJ, and Waters were about as entertaining as it gets, IMO.

It's a lot closer than people are giving Cam Thomas credit.
Very similar shooting percentages with Chris Jackson shooting an extra 6 times per game on average.

There is a big difference in assists, but in terms of pure scoring, Cam Thomas has a chance to be the best.

Even though he can force to "questionable" shots, Thomas has been fairly efficient. He's shooting 47%. That's only 6th best in the SEC. But it is put in better context when you realize he's taken the most shots in the SEC. Only Stewart from MSU has taken as many shots and making them at a higher % right now (though he's averaging 6 less ppg). Thomas is a three level scorer. he can hit from inside the arc...at the rim (though he doesn't go there often)...from 3 AND he's shooting 88% from the FT line.

Just because of the way the game is played (slower pace than in 1988) and the fact LSU has several good options on the team, I don't think he'll seriously threaten Jackson's 30 ppg average. But that's not to say he couldn't if he played under the same conditions as Jackson.

Maybe the best compliment I can give to Jackson is was a combination of Waters and Thomas. He was lightening quick off the dribble and could break down defenders for an open shot. He was also incredibly crafty at getting to the rim for a guy who wasn't very tall (6'1" at best) - Like Waters. He also had a quick, compact and pure shooting stroke like Thomas

Nobody will be as good as a freshman at LSU as Chris Jackson.

Pete would have been had he been allowed to play as a freshman.

What? The shot clock has been reduced, and it is normal to see a player shoot 10 3s per game. If anything he game is built more for scoring now, so your logic is flawed and completely backwards.

Hell, you are acting like CJ played with nobodies on the team. That roster included Blanton, Sims, and Singleton along with a young Hammink. They were just as good if not better options than this team has. Let’s be real and stop trying to flip history to make the current player better.

This is a bad as some of you trying to act like Maravich was overrated.

Just because the shot clock was longer doesn't mean teams drained it as a stategy to grind out half-court games at a slow pace of play.

This is LSU's 88-89 schedule.

LINK

The overwhelming majority of those games were played in the 80's, 90', 100's. In fact, LSU scored in 100's in ELEVEN games that season. Now if a team scores in the 80's we act like it is a tremendous offensive output. The shot clock may have existed in 1988-89. But LSU didn't care. That team averaged 72 shots per game. Opponents averaged 70. Total, that is about 25 MORE shots per game than what we see now. For reference, THIS LSU team is averaging 58 shots per game...even with a reduced shot clock.

They were solid, but mostly role players. Blanton was the only other real scoring option for that team.

The point I'm trying to make is that Thomas probably won't get the volume of shots that Jackson got to set the record. Jackson averaged 23 shots per game. Thomas is averaging 17. While FAR and AWAY the most shots any single player has averaged on a Wade team, it's still well below Jackson's average. So, my point remains. If Thomas played under the same conditions Jackson played: 23 shots per game for a coach that was just fine playing games in the 100's, he could average 30+ points. The fact is that is unlikely to happen. Thus, while he very well could be a better scorer than Jackson, it is unlikely he'll exceed his number simply because they played in two different eras.

This one aged like fine milk.

Like I said. Thomas isn’t in the same GALAXY as CJ.

the stats I've seen says Cam is only shooting 40.3%, and only 28% from beyond the arc.

Those are among the very worst of the top 100 scorers in the country.

This young kid has a lot to learn. Time will tell . There's much to learn about this game beyond standing there and shooting 30 footers. To compare him to prior LSU greats at this point is ridiculous.

Not even close. Chris Jackson was better. Shaquille O’Neil was better. Pistol Pete Maravich was waaaaayy better.
