In my experience rice in a rice field only lasts a few weeks into the season if that....its other seed bearing plants that take root and produce that attracts waterfowl. I take your point though about the fields being plowed down to dust....if that is the case any plant taking root and producing food would be limited. I was in a lease outside of Stuttgart between 1984 and 1990 and we had rice fields and timber and the rice fields never had a lot of rice in them during the season but other weeds flourished in them....but that may have been more a function of those relatively small tracts being managed for waterfowl as much as rice....

invertabrates living in the rice and other moist soil plants may be more important for waterfowl than the rice or other plants... no invertabrates = no ducks

Not sure if arkansas farmers do this or not, I would imagine they do - but rice farmers in NELA after harvest will plow that field down to dust in order to have to do less prep for next planting season. Very very little rice left in those fields
Plowing is the fall is fricking BAE

Delacroix report from yesterday was thin. Bring a fishing pole.

Getting spotty reports from Delacroix, some good, some not. Was out and about this morning and there were pockets of birds, had some grays around my lease. You could easily go ride around and not see any, or go ride around and see a few hundred.

Definitely more birds this year for opening day than last year on our lease in Delacroix, but that really isn't saying much. We have some teal and greys.

If it’s a wet fall and you can’t plow, it makes for a ton of heartache come spring. Getting a week or two of dry weather in the fall where you can plow and blade dry is a big leg up.

Are the field you hunt managed for waterfowl and rice production or is waterfowl ancillary to rice production? Just curious if it makes a difference in how it is harvested and what is done when it is harvested as far as "plowing them to dust" goes.

Not a lot of plowing to dust in most fields in NELA. There is at least stubble but the place we hunt, the geese will pretty much do what the tractor didn't do. Let about 10K sit on a field and in a few days, it looks like the Dead Sea.

Yea lot leave their stubble then buffalo during winter
some will pass kelly diamond and then burn or leave

In South LA most is crawfished and then what is 2nd crop will rarely have a chance to get worked in the fall after its harvested.

Went to Delacroix Wednesday to check out damage to the blind. Maybe saw 20 ducks and covered a lot of water between little lake to Leary. Went back this past Tuesday to work on blind and probably saw a over 100. Went back today to put boat in the water for tomorrow and put our decoys and maybe say 3 dozen.

What about PLH? They had plenty in Teal season and we were sucking wind in Delacroix. I bet they got birds and keeping it tight to the vest. Can't say I blame them; lotta poachers down that way.

Looks like the aerial survey is the lowest count on record. Not good news but continues the trend from the last few years.

Went to lease on coast today to brush what’s left of our blinds. Few birds in spots, already plenty 2-3 miles offshore on gulf. Trout bite is pretty good in lower terrebonne. Fresh water marsh not many birds at all.

Well, for the first time in 30years, I can very humbly say that we DNF on opening day! Un F'ing believable. No joke, last year was the first time that we didn't limit on opener. This year takes the cake, we didn't fire a shot. This is a prime lease in Delacroix that has traditionally been awesome; but has been getting steadily worse the past 5 seasons. This one takes the cake; chalk it up to 2020 and it's Biden's fault!

Hopedale

Few pockets of greys, and a few one offs. Saw a pair of mottled ducks, and plenty of hoodies.

Little less than opening day last year but on par with what we get there.
