re: Ringnecks and spoonies...

Posted by skullraker on 11/19/25 at 8:55 am to
I agree that Spoonies are fine table fare and very closely related to BWT. Hell, many times the breast meat is lighter than the BWT. I always take all the Spoonies when dividing up the strap if no one else wants them. I actually prefer them over Greys; but the meat yield is much lower.

As far as ringnecks go; I had to be educated before I realized that they are not the same as Dogris! We would rarely see RN's in Delacroix; but always had plenty Dogris. It wasn't till I hunted with some buddies back in HS at Salvador WMA where we killed several RN's. We would take the breast meat and make poppers in the over on broil (mid rare), and that is some fine eating Son!

I believe Widgeon to be the hardest duck to kill. They are on a different level when wounded compared to other ducks; tough sum bitches. While I love the way they make a strap look beautiful; I will give them away as their meat is so deep red and strong. Gimmie a Spoonie all day over widgen, greys or Mott's!

re: Cordless Fillet Knife

Check out the Old Timer cordless knife; but use the Mister Twister blades. I have cleaned several hundred marsh bass, specks and 30-40 redfish without issues. Good unit for sub $100.
Tryin to help a Brother out here: I can only comment on SELA public areas. Forget Pearl River South of Hwy 90. However, good wood duck hunting can be done boatless (pirouge is better off the Honey Island swamp exit off I-59.

Big Branch does have pirouge paddle in sections that can be productive at times but is also very crowded (best to go on the Wednesday or Thursday hunt if possible).

If you have a young kid/youth (15 and under), Bayou Sauvage sometimes has quality hunting. You can participate in the hunt but must oversee at least 1 youth who is also actively hunting. Very limited pirouge access but if you study the maps you can locate a couple spots that would grant pirouge access. It is better to get a small flatboat and bring pirouges if you have access to a boat.

We are going up for the first time too. We have friends that have a tailgate in the Grove. Is it generally acceptable to drag a rolling ice chest into the Grove? I have heard that you must drink from a cup (no cans/bottles/koozies). I don't want to drag my cool pops a mile only to have some OM security to dump it out or confiscate it.

Not hearing much in Delacroix area. We gonna try anyway. Hopefully we get a few. Heard good numbers further South along the River.

2025 LSU football schedule calendar

Posted by skullraker on 8/22/25 at 2:15 pm
Does anybody know where I can get a wall calendar 2025 football schedule? I have always been able to easily get one from any of the liquor distributors; but this year all my connection cannot produce LSU calendar. I got Tulane and saints but no LSU! Hell, even sometimes Rouse's prints some and gives them out. Tough nut to crack this year.

re: 2 week in duck reports

Poaching is epidemic in Delacroix when the birds are thick. Or like you said the poachers follow the ducks.

Get boat #'s and pics, names if possible and contact Sheriff and your lease contact. If they are willing to go to court and prosecute them it's worth the exercise.
Don't recall the year; but I recall watching Florida push our Poo in for a day game in the 90's while it was raining balls.

re: Any experience with CVA Scout?

I have a 7mm-08 Scout. It shoots good, light, compact, easy carrying. Get the scout and spend a lil extra on glass.

Talked to two different guys who took kids to Delacroix/Carnarvon. Both did well; mostly BW and few whistlers.
Here is Fritchie marsh section of BBfile:///C:/Users/sauva/Pictures/Fritchie%20Marsh%20Big%20Branch.jpg.
I swapped original garbage scope on Barnett unit with Nikon. It is sweet and stays useful till dark. Not sure if they still make them though. Paid $130-140 for it several years back.

re: fish frying

My 2 cents: Ice bath fillets for 10-15 minutes; shake off water. yellow mustard cut with water to lessen viscosity. dredge in mustard, shake off. Coat in Slap ya Momma fish fry. Fry in smaller batches at minimum 350. Don't sleep on the Slap Ya Momma!
Can you elaborate on Fritchie area North of the Rigolets, close to the highway? Are you talking about the section in the Fritchie area that is on NE side along HWY 190 (Fremeaux)? I have scouted that area a couple times and did not see much deer sign; but plenty hog sign.
Does anybody know if you can get rid of the updated version and revert back to the "old" version? this thing sucks all around. I've got so damn much time and effort loading boundaries, trails, markers etc - I hate to start over on another app.
My son has the paid for On X app and the property ownership feature is nice.

New HuntStand app issue with solunars

Posted by skullraker on 10/24/24 at 8:56 am
I reluctantly downloaded the update on HuntStand and now the solunar table are not even remotely accurate. I gave it a few weeks now assuming something was glitching and would soon be corrected. But as of today, it's still showing major/minor periods of like 7or 8 hours. Anybody else seeing this? Or does it show accurate projections?

re: Stock muffler on WMA's

Posted by skullraker on 10/23/24 at 1:34 pm to
For the record: my son bought a boat that has the CH SD motor on it. He intends to put a conventional 40HP outboard and sell the CH. But until he does, we plan to run the CH on our PRIVATE lease in Delacroix. I hate how loud they are too; but until he sells it, we will use it. The reference to PRWMA was strictly because we live nearby, and he wanted to go run the boat without anybody writing him a ticket.

Alway been a Minn Kota guy. Like their customer service department and parts availability. Prices are usually very reasonable too.

Stock muffler on WMA's

Posted by skullraker on 10/15/24 at 3:20 pm
I recently acquired a Copperhead SD motor that has a MAC aftermarket performance muffler. I was told that if you run a mud motor on a WMA that allows them you will have to have a stock muffler on the engine. Can anyone confirm if these laws are actually being enforced (In particular on PRWMA in LA)? And if so; anybody got a used stock muffler they care to part with? I look up a new unit and they ain't cheap.

What general area in Delacroix do you hunt? My buddy went to our lease South of Lery and only got one on Saturday.
