Exactly, OP is potentially close to retirement already. Why not bank the salary and lower your means, live like your in medical school for the next 8 years and retire early?

He’s probably retail so yeah probably not no matter where he is.

Anyway OP, don’t do it for the reasons you described. You aren’t going to med school for the right reasons and you’re going to ask yourself what you got yourself into after M1 year.

I honestly feel like you’re some kind of a shite posting troll because wanting to suspend 8 years of your life for a 150k -> 225k jump is retarded. You’re better off just staring a side hustle business.

Guess what? The years will tick by whether you go to med school/residency or not. Absolutely go for it, and good luck!

The path less traveled ? You sure you want to do something that would make you semi- iconoclastic and make everybody who knows you think you have huge balls? Go for it.

Have you thought about physician assistant? Same type of work, decent compensation, and only requires a couple years of post graduate.

In know a woman who started at 50. Becoming a doctor was her life long ambition and she decided to go for it.

Follow your dream and do what makes you happy.

I’m doing it at 27 and I thought I was old you’re never too old to do anything. Ironically I almost chose pharmacy (I even took the pcat) but I guess you would say I made the right call?

Exactly right. I've asked myself this numerous times, and I felt like I was doing medicine for the right reasons. And it isn't a sure thing that a 46 year old pharmacist would even get in. There is implicit ageism in the medical school process.

If the OP hasn't taken the MCAT yet then this thread is probably premature. Preparing for the MCAT while working is extremely difficult.

If you want to be a doctor, become a doctor. I don't care how old you are.

Maybe try some other kind of pharmaceutical job instead of walgreens? Can't you do something at a hospital or research?

Kudos to you, do it...

I’ve been a therapist for 30 years, my wife is trying to convince me into taking a directors job somewhere... frick that, I'm hoping to retire in 10 years. I don’t want to deal with the administrative headaches and staffing bs....

Besides, it may actually be a drop in pay...

Any of you baws go to medical school late?

The destruction of pharmacy at the hands of the Pharmacy Benefits Managers is nearing completion. In addition, a bunch of new pharmacy schools were opened in the last 10 years flooding the labor market. Salaries are dropping like a rock.

I’ve got enough money to pay for med school and support my family for a condensed three year program. I think it’s a rock solid plan.

If I get more upvotes, I’m doing it.

Why not dental? They seem to make good money with less hours and headaches.

What are the chances of a 46 year old dude even getting accepted into a medical school program? Honestly never heard of someone starting that late

This is only tangentially related, but I'm 33 and just started taking courses this Fall semester to eventually go back to Nursing school. Ultimately, I want to become a pediatric nurse. From personal/mental health issues to work, I had too much going on throughout my 20's to pursue going back, or at least that's what I told myself, and so I stayed with a secure job that I hated.

Even now, it often feels like I'm pushing a boulder up a never-ending hill; I had a lot of "goals" & "dreams" that I felt like I had to have accomplished by the time I hit 30 or it would forever be too late, none of which I hit or accomplished by the way. I get discouraged a lot, tbh a lot of the things that hindered me going back earlier are still issues I deal with now, but I'm at least taking steps finally. Concrete, tangible steps and not just abstract plans or hopes. On one hand, I'll still get down because I'll have regrets over being 33 and just now pursuing a dream I had since when I originally went through college. But, at the same time, I realize that the avoidant coping mechanisms and arbitrary time/age-related deadlines only serve to keep me stuck, and if I want to accomplish something that I'm fully capable of doing so and that there's still time.

That was a bit of a ramble, but what I'm trying to say is that if going back to med school is something you truly want to do, then it's better to do it late than never do it and then live with that regret. I have a psychiatrist and she used to tell me that there were people as old as 50 in her class when she went through med school...it's never too late to pursue something if it's something you genuinely want to accomplish. And, as for being older, I struggle with intrusive thoughts about what I'm doing and I'm only 33...so, it's extremely encouraging & inspiring to see that you're contemplating/have decided to go back.

I've had like 2 hours of sleep so that's certainly not the most coherent, or eloquent, response I've ever given. But, hopefully you find it helpful, even though my situation is a little different. We only go through life once & as I get older I realize just how precious of a commodity time really is...and how devastating regret can be...so I really hope you pursue med school and wish you all the best.
