My advice is to turn back now unless you can somehow pay for medical school and make it through residency debt free.

Otherwise it probably won’t be worth it. Plenty of other great careers out there where you can make a difference.

Go to dental school. No residency and earning potential is much greater than 250. You’ll catch up much faster.

If you listen to enough people this is true of almost any profession these days. I got talked out of law school by lawyers I respect, and now I’m an accountant. I just don’t see that I am better off following that advice.

We are all facing the same issues from tight labor markets and automation setting unrealistic expectations.

The reason they give is profits are dropping and supply of pharmacists is skyrocketing.

Pharmacy is probably one of the worst investments of time imaginable right now. Better off doing chemE or some 4 year degree like that.

I can attest to their thievery.

Got a script for a basic generic diabetes medication. I got it filled at Walgreens the first time. They charged me about 15 dollars for a 30 day supply.

I did some checking and found that Walmart had the same medication on their 4 dollar generics list. So the next time, I got it filled there. It was free with my insurance. Even pharmacies like Publix have that medication free without insurance as well.

The only difference was at Walgreens they physically had to count each pill and put it in their bottle while Walmart had their bottles prepackaged and ready to go with an internal seal like a package of tynenol.

If you can do it, go for it.

I don't know many 46 year olds who could suck it up and be a student again.

This happens in medicine. Especially FM where you will have to sign all kinds of preauths/refills/insurance BS.

I’m not gonna say don’t follow your passion/goals. If it’s what you want go for it. But medicine is hardly a bright spot. CMG (corporate medicine) and big hospitals are owning the market. Ones ability to practice medicine as one pleases is not nearly as easy as it used to be without checking/clicking a million boxes.

Financially, I do not think this is a wise investment. FM salaries generally aren’t much higher depending on your location. You are better off investing that money and saving wisely.

I’m guessing since you are 46, you’ll have to take a few classes, and if that is the case best case scenario if you get in first time you are 48. Then 6-7 years later you are 54 starting medicine. Shite that’s the age I’m hoping to get out.

How does your family feel about this too?

Excellent financial analysis......when you add it up in black and white it is impactful

Except that he left out the part where the OP said his salary could go to 0. If the OP loses his job, how does that affect t the analysis?

Be smart and be a hospitalist.

Short residency.

7 on, 7 off.

It'll be boring as frick, but you'll be relatively low stress.

We all hope to get out sooner and live the life Illustrated in the financial planners brochure. Trouble is, those plans are easily changed. I’d imagine the OP had a similar dream, but developments in his profession have scuttled those plans. Look at O & G. Lots of folks in different roles having to pursue other options now.
Sounds like he thinks the ship is sinking and wants off. I say jump. Don’t stay where you are and be miserable.

This is not a thing. Maybe in the Caribbean or something, but I wouldn’t want you to be my doctor. Med school is 4 years, residency is 3. Skip the full residency and you can only get a job making about what a pharmacist does.

FWIW my wife is a dr. just got out of residency 3 years ago. she said if she had to do it over again she would not go into medicine. the bureaucracy and politics have made her resent the whole system.

You don’t want to be on your death bad asking what if. If you have an interest go for it. Life is too short

The grass is always greener. Some of the red tape OP is speaking about is the same in medicine. I just can’t imagine any financial scenario where I think someone age 46 with a family would benefit from going to med school.

What reason do they give for reducing your compensation? Are you still doing the same job / working the same hours?

Our pharmacy is on track to pay 530k in DIR fees which are dispensing fees charged to you after the fact by the PBMs. I completely understand.

Without the deregulation of the PBMs by Obamacare, I would probably be making 250k right now.

My wife is promoting the hell out of the idea. She’s worried we won’t be able to afford Botox anymore.
