pretty sure these books are now used for a different purpose than George Orwell intended.

Instead of being stories to illustrate the folly of Marxism and socialism they are used to show how these flawed systems can be applied.

1984 should be required reading along with historical presentations of the atrocities that the communist ideology was responsible for in the 20th century.

I read 1984 but not Animal Farm. However I remember we got to pick certain books to read out of a list. Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, 1984, and a bunch of others were on the list. I picked 1984.

I also remember reading books like Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the Rye, Great Gatsby, etc.

I graduated high school in ‘06.

Our students should be taught early and often the catastrophic and certain dangers of socialism.

Neither were when I was in high school. We had to read To Kill a Mockingbird, though.

Side note: the best assigned reading I ever had was “Night” by Elie Wiesel. It wasn’t like a state required reading but my 12th grade English teacher assigned it. Captivating book.

Neither were for my son though I got him to read 1984 as a junior as an optional reading for class.

In early grade school was always a fan of

We're so integrated now, it's probably irrelevant but not knowing or even really seeing any black kids when I was young (small farm town Kansas), this book made me feel like little black kids were just like me.

I had to read both, as well as Brave New World, but it was private school.

They never were from a universal perspective......

Some schools did. Some schools did one. Some did neither.

The irony is that Orwell was an avid socialist. The books were criticisms of the types of socialism he disagreed with.

Animal Farm was for me, 1984 wasn’t but I read it. Graduated in 2000. Looking at previous poster graduation dates I feel old.
