1984 was... Animal Farm... Don't think so.

Required? I'm pretty sure they've been banned in public schools.

Graduated in '97 and I they were not required reading back then. So
Maybe now, but I do remember both books being at my school library because I did read them both, and checked them out from there.

Why read about it when we're living in it

Read Animal Farm, but not 1984.
Graduated high school in the past decade.

I read both. Animal farm in 8th grade and high school. Re-reading 1984 right now and it’s scaring me tbh
ETA: Graduated 2012 at a very progressive NOVA high school. Hopefully they still read it.

No. It would negate all their indoctrination efforts.

Got a kid starting 9th grade in Ascension Parish public school, they are reading Animal Farm as summer reading

Add A Brave New World and Lord of the Flies to the list.

Neither book was ever mentioned in my HS, much less required reading even in honors or AP classes. Orwell was never discussed at all. Graduated 2011.
We only read feminist authored bullshite and renaissance-era literature, sadly. With a sprinkling of Kipling and the like in there as well.

Well, they were.
But I'm failing to see what Animal Farm has to do with current events.

It depends on the teachers. I read Animal Farm, but not 1984. Fahrenheit 451 is a pretty popular selection these days.

At least one EBR high school made all juniors or seniors read 1984 within the last 5 years or so. Probably more of a choice by the teachers than anyone at a district level.
ETA: I once worked for a high school principal who had no idea what Fahrenheit 451 was even about. So don't get your hopes up that these kids are being exposed to great literary works and their meanings.
