How can you say this...

quote:

facemasks are virtue signaling at best

When the research you quoted states this...

quote:

Based on the RCTs, modestly protective against household infections when both infected and uninfected members wear facemasks. We expect RCTs to under-estimate the protective effect.

Or, that info could have been fabricated and/or embellished by companies like 3M.
I’m not actually sure I’ve heard it argued in relation to masks as it has been presented more generally in regards to anything that increases/decreases exposure.

However, this is not something new though. Apparently during the Spanish Flu, those who contracted outside the home and brought it into the home, had far fewer fatalities than those who contacted inside the home as the viral exposure is naturally much greater within families and within the home.

The CDC should have required that no one wear a mask.

All the hardasses would have said, “No one is going to tell me that I can’t wear a mask! I’ll show you”.

That’s all this bickering is about.

Why do some of you get so triggered and bothered about people wearing masks? Whether a person chooses to wear a mask or not, is it really any of your business?

You remember that they did that already back in March right?

Yes, anyone that dared to not share your opinion is obviously just a contrarian.

Cloth homemade masks... nope. They are just giving people a false sense of security

They barely stop dust and pollen, not sure why people believe they'd stop a virus

No it's not that. It's the same fricking thing in every thread dude. You're a broken record. You like picking fights with people. Plain and simple. Don't get all hurt feelings now. You're a contrarian. Be proud of it and wear the crown.

This is where you go when you can't respond to the criticisms of your opinion.

And what exactly am I being a contrarian about in this thread?

Of course they do

No they really don’t. There’s a reason medical professionals are taught how to use PPE properly. And most people aren’t using masks properly, and likely are spreading more germs to their faces.

And that’s not why you are washing your hands, not to kill bacteria. You’re washing it away. Data is readily available that supports the reduction of bacteria by Hand washing. It’s the most effective way to prevent disease transmission.

It won't totally stop the virus, but the virus is primarily spread through large droplets from sneezing, coughing, and talking. It will block those at least to a large degree.

You can argue that you won't cough, sneeze, or talk to people and that's fine, but on a population level people are nasty and will be sneezing, coughing, and talking. Yes the potential for spread is everywhere, which is where frequent hand washing and hand sanitizing becomes even more important.

The masks aren't an end-all be-all solution. They are part of a larger suite of preventative measures, each one kind of being like layers of Swiss cheese where fewest holes possible are lined up so spread is slowed. People are hung up on them and act like they're supposed to stop the virus all on their own, but that's never the design.

Wearing masks is now drawn around political lines. A sign of diligence and safety concern for some, American pride in not wearing one for others.

In other words we are officially in idiocracy.

I absolutely can take criticisms of my opinion. I invite it. Sometimes I'm dead wrong. A lot of times I'm dead wrong. I want you to give me something else to think about. But that's not my point. My point is that I figured you (as a poster) out a long time ago.

So it kinda works in ideal situations where the users are using it correctly. If you will read the CDC guidelines regarding cloth masks, they specifically state that they don't want the general public to use the M95 masks. Why? Because those actually work and they want them reserved for healthcare workers.
