Out of curiosity, have you discussed this finding with your daughter?
If so, what's her response?
To everyone second-guessing spending 8k on a gift for his daughter, what the hell? 8k isn't 80k. Look around. There's plenty of money out there. Is it better to just let it sit in the bank and she gets it all when he dies?
Does she NEED an 8k violin? Of course not. Do you NEED $100 shoes? Nope, but they sure are more comfy than the Wal mart $19 ones.

Just get her something classic and refinish it. I have an old Stradivarius that I picked up for $600. I refinished it and it looks brand new. The old ones sound great if you take care of them.

I know nothing about old violins, however I have seen my share of old upright bass.
I have never seen an old instrument with carved shite on the soundboard. The varnish job looks like someone antiqued it in their garage.
You appear to live in Nashville, call Belmont and ask to have a professor from the music department examine it.

350 was for the OT. Realistically, based on the sound it produces, I’d pay $3000 for it knowing that I’d likely never get that back if I decided to sell or trade for something better later.
He either takes the deal, or he doesn't
Another option... Since your daughter likes the violin, offer to rent it for 6 months or so until both you and the owner can find appraisals and price you are both comfortable with.
Be as kind and diplomatic as possible. If you walk in insulting the guy, your deal is over before it starts.
BTW... my favorite young YouTube violinist - Elia Bastida (from an amazing school in Barcelona)

This is good advice. My daughter wanted a Miata for graduation, but I found a perfectly fine '69 Road Runner that just needed points and some Turtle Wax for her. The 426 is great in case she needs to pull a U-Haul on her way to ULM.

If you are getting a violin to play. You would get one of those new resin ones that looks like something off a spaceship.

OP
I think your in luck, i know a wealthy Prince of Lesotho, and he's actually been looking for you.
DM me your Social Security #, DOB, Full name, and routing numbers to any banks you use.
He will be sending 10.1 Million via wire transfer, he just needs 50K up front, to make sure the transfer goes thru.

My son tried to hit me up for a $4000.00 guitar last year. He is an average guitar player at best. I countered with $4000.00 worth of lessons and a $500 guitar but he didn’t want to hear that. He bought the 4K guitar with his own money (got a loan) and now regrets it. Shockingly he sounds the same as he did last year. My point is ...unless that $8000 violin is going to appreciate in value it’s a waste. It’s always the Indian and never the bow.

Get her a digital violin.
I have a $15,000 acoustic piano, but prefer playing on my $700 digital.

I don’t know shite about violins but you can get a bad arse guitar for a few grand. Why are you spending $8k on a kids instrument. Is she a prodigy or you just think she is?

Let your daughter enjoy the best sounding violin in Nashville. Or tell your daughter that her love of music and potential future means less to you than your watch and the violin is going back.
This. Suck it up and tell the little one, "Merry Christmas".
You might want to approach the vendor with your concerns about authenticity and try to haggle the price. Surely they will be able to prove authenticity to your satisfaction, or adjust price accordingly.

Violins are notoriously expensive. They're not the average horn or wind instrument. Even cheaper ones for pros are a grand.
A friend plays Violin in the NO Philharmonic. She was injured and her instrument damaged/destroyed when a piece of lighting fell and hit her at a performance. Her instrument was estimated at ~$50k.

She started off on an unlabeled german 7/8 violin that is likely 75+ years old. She graduated to a 70 year old Juzek.
