When you up your son's trumpet look for a used Strad. I had a 1967 Bach Strad I got for $350. Great trumpet.
Let my cousin borrow it when he went to DePaul and the fricker sold it.

Since you brought up a Bach Strad...
My very frugal parents bought me a brand new Strad for my 14th birthday in 1978. As I recall it was about $550, which of course was a ton of money for them, and to this day I still appreciate their sacrifice.
I played it through high school, and honestly never worked hard enough to do it justice, but I never sold it after high school as I just never needed that cash.
In 2012 my daughter decided to join the middle school band and chose to play the trumpet (although I tried to talk her out of it.). Gave her my horn. She had a great teacher, a great horn and a great work ethic. She kicked butt! A lot of her mates admired her old "classic" Strat.
She eventually asked for a cheap horn to march with to save it from more dents and scratches.
Ended up loving band and was a drum major her senior year.
The Strad was a nice link from my parents to me, to her! She still plays it as a hobby.

Of all the posts, this one leads me to believe the $8k would be a silly move. It’s one thing if y’all have great ears and it’s a special instrument regardless of origin...
She apparently has a great ear because her instructor said it was rare to find a violin under $5000 that sounds as good as the $2700 one. She thought the Derazey was too loud. We kind of liked the power because she plays some large outdoor venues without amplification. She did change her opinion some, but she only slightly favored the Derazey.
I’ll update again after I present the violin shop with my theory that they are selling a fake.

pictures show two totally different quality items. which has a huge effect on value

Yeah, bring in one of those Pawn Stars experts from Vegas.

My daughter had a jam session this afternoon and her instructor was able to play and listen to both the violins we have on trial. She was blown away by the one I didn’t mention in this thread (a 1903 F. Lincoln Johnson) that is a paltry $2700.
You are coming to a decision point. Do you really think your daughter is going to be good enough at this stuff to make a decent living? Perhaps you should talk her into Nuclear Engineering.

though anyone that would spend more than $8000 on a watch is certifiably crazy.
I don’t want to take the time to search but aren’t you the guy with about a half million dollars worth of watches. Just trying to make sure that joke didn’t go over my head.

unless that $8000 violin is going to appreciate in value it’s a waste.
Old violins absolutely appreciate. You know what’s worth more than a 120 year old violin? The same violin in the same condition at 121 years old.
The problem with the $7900 violin is that it’s not a $7900 violin. The value would be very subjective because it’s been “Frankensteined”.

Yeah, "pass".
