It is will soon be illegal in California for both public and charter schools to suspend disruptive students from kindergarten through eighth grade.

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday signed into law Senate Bill 419, which permanently prohibits willful defiance suspensions in grades four and five.

It also bans such suspensions in grades six through eight for five years. The law goes into effect July 1, 2020.

quote:

Sen. Nancy Skinner, D-Berkeley, who wrote the new law, said it would “keep kids in school where they belong and where teachers and counselors can help them thrive.” “SB 419 puts the needs of kids first,” she said.

quote:

SB 419 was also praised by civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, who said in a statement that, “I strongly believe that SB 419 will bring justice to California youth by eliminating suspensions for disruption and defiance, putting an end to discriminatory discipline policies and instituting restorative justice practices.”

They should just ban disruptive behavior and it would solve all their problems.

More kids with zero consequences for their actions. Let's see how this experiment ends.

Great.

SO now the 20+ other kids in the class will be fricked. But at least they're woke!

Good job Cali

gonna be awesome to be a good kid that follows the rules when the losers and assholes now have no consequences for their bullshite.

i'm sure all the good kids' parents are just going to tolerate it and definitely not take their good kids elsewhere.

i'm sure the school definitely won't fill up with nothing but punk kids.

Yeah, that will work as well as lifting punishments for anyone who steals under $750 worth.

Why don't you ask the model students who aren't disrupting class if they agree?

They tried a form of this in Miami a while back. That’s how Trayvon Martin found himself sent to his dad’s place in Sanford, FL, outside of Orlando, rather than being in juvie for burglary.

Suspensions don't really work though. There should be repercussions, but not in the form of suspension. All you're doing is taking a problem child and making them worse.

Ok then. If they don’t work, how do you fix the problem? Because having them in the class when they are defiant fricks the other 20+ kids in that class.

It bans suspensions, not punishment. The idea is that letting a kid stay at home isn’t an effective punishment, and simply sets them further behind, creating a behavior cycle. While the article doesn’t go into detail, I imagine that disruptive students will still be at risk of in school detention, etc.

Must suck to be the millions of Californians outside of LA/SF who get subjected to all of their whims.

Don’t just spew the talking points to support your anti California agenda. The students will still be immediately removed from the classroom to what we called in school suspension in the south. They are just stopping the practice of sending kids home without any school work. The goal was to continue to attempt to educate bad kids in hopes of the kids turning it around and returning to class eventually.

All that being said, us Californians would love to secede. Please call your representatives and request that our massive economy be booted from your country.

I suppose the meaning of disruption is just too complex for them to understand.

Now, no matter what a parent tries to do at home, their kid will learn less because the teacher will be caring for some kind of deviant all day.
