I was scheduled to return from my last deployment the day before my kid was due. My squadron commander found out and sent me home(against my will) a week early on an airline. I wanted to fly the planes home and get the flight time. He wouldn’t risk us breaking and me missing the birth. The planes made it with 6 hrs to spare, but hindsight is 20/20

I didn't.

No. And if there was, I would change professions.

For something that I am contractually obligated to do and breaking that contract would reduce my ability to support the child.

In other words, if it would hurt my financial position by a material amount, I could miss it.

If I was a professional ball player and was a key player I am not going to let my team suffer.

I'll be at the hospital as soon as the game ends, if its a home game I would ask for police escort to get to the hospital, but if you play in the NFL you get paid 16 times a year. You decide to not play a game you don't get paid.

If it was something business related and it was a one time opportunity that would benefit my family financially long term then i'd miss it.

But for the most part there isn't much that would make me miss it.

Wow, thanks for letting us know what you'd do in that situation.

I dealt with this issue in 1995 when I worked in biotech. I told my manager that I would not travel in a window two weeks before and after my wife's due date. It just so happened that we had a national sales meeting within that period.

They insisted that I attend the meeting and were adamant about it. This surprised me since this company seemed to be family friendly in the time that I worked for them.

I didn't want to get fired but I was not going to that meeting and miss the birth of my son. There was a very senior rep working in my area that was a known busy body that I decided to use to help the company managers understand how serious I was about being present for my son's birth.

I mentioned at a weekly breakfast meeting that I would file a complaint with human resources about this issue. I knew she would blab all over the company about this, since this is what she does.

Within a couple of days, I got a phone call from the Regional manager excusing me from the meeting and expressing to me how important it was that I be there for the birth of my son.

No. It's just money. My home life is way more important than any job.

I'm sure your hypothetical wife and children are happy to know who is your highest priority.

I know a guy that missed the birth of his first child for a regular hunting trip. The kind of trip he does every weekend during hunting season. He's now divorced unsurprisingly and seems to be a pretty shite dad too

Not surprised at all you have “acquaintances” like that.
