Had a 5 day/week cafeteria ticket. 5$ budget for weekend would cover a bottle of FoodTown Bourbon and a box of Ritz crackers

Microwave popcorn sustained me.

You could furnish your El Cid apartment for free if you cruised down Burbank at the end of the semester.

Wasn't college but relative. In 2011 during divorce and bankruptcy I was delivering pizza as a second/night job. There were a few times where I'd take the closing shift to make as much as possible and go straight to the Chase atm after I got off at 1130 to deposit the $50-60 in tips to not overdraft at midnight when my kids' tuition draft would hit. I'd get to bed about 1am and then up for work at my real job for 530am. This went on for 4 yrs.
I'll be damned if I'm ever in a situation like that again and I'll also never forget what it felt like.

And that's why I love this ***** and don't even know him.

Eta: sorry if the usage of ***** offends anyone; baw didn't convey the love enough.

Didn't pay for cable but I used an extra coaxial cable for a TV antenna and taped it to the wall with scotch tape and stuck aluminum foil on the end to get better reception.

I did have a job making about 200/wk so my budget was 800/mth.

I don't remember meals being that big of a deal. With trips to sams where I loaded up on easy mac and cheese, frozen chicken breast, tuna, and redbeans and rice, along with the 60 load boxes of detergent, paper towels, and trash bags.

Winn Dixie trips with $1 frozen totinos pizzas, canned veggies, 10 for $10 dollar lipton noodle packets, tuna helper, Ramon noodles, PB&J, and cereal.

I did line my pockets with ziplocks a few times when going to the greatwall and stuffed them with eggrolls and chicken on stick (minus the stick).

I could easily go back to that life if it was just me and I often wonder how much money I would have if I did but with a wife and 3 kids, it ain't happening.

I was fortunate to have a pretty steady supply of fish and game. Dad would take us more for entertainment value than anything else. But eventually I began chasing dear way more then deer and that’s when it required some creativity.

Would lift silverware from dining hall. Always carried gallon ziplocks in my book sack. Mr Ghatti’s buffet was hit pretty regularly. Usually after a trip to donate plasma. We probably missed a great opportunity to make a college cookbook. Never realized how many combinations one could make Mac and Cheese, ramen and hormel chili.

We were so poor in college that we lived in a box in a hole in the road.

was never dirt poor but i do remember starting a new job and having to wait 3 weeks for my first paycheck, and i had to ask my new boss for $10 to borrow.

I remember going to wal mart and getting 10 of the knock off Totinos pizzas, which were like .89 cents each. I remember feeling so low eating those for 4 days in a row until pay day

I ran out of money for anything but gas and only had a back of frozen boneless/skinless chicken breasts and 5lbs of sweet potatoes.
It lasted me 2.5 weeks until I got paid again.

I spent part of my time at LSU living in a unairconditioned dorm. My only source of cooling was a ceiling fan turning at 5 rpm.

The meal plan didn't cover weekends so there were weekends when I hate nothing but Mac & Cheese because it was $.49 a box at the A&P on Highland. Four meals for approximately $2.00.

Could you clarify this? I am trying to get my head around what you are saying here.

quote:

Also, had several friends who had gas cards and would let me pay $.50 on the dollar for gas and beer.
Sames friends would charge their books to parents (and charge mine) and I would pay them 1/2 the money.
To some extent, you and your friends were rather nifty and creative... but on the other hand, hard to look at that admission and not see thieving, dindunuffin-like behavior, that you could have been prosecuted for. I hope you aren't teaching anyone in the next generation that what you did was acceptable. But luckily for us all, you detailed your fraudulent crimes here on the O-T.

The only credit card I had back then was a Texaco gas card, so I shopped at the Texaco convenience store.
