This cheating scandal got me thinking about the ways I coped to get through school.

Like eating rice sandwiches. Like shaving with soap instead of shaving cream. Like selling plasma.

Whatcha got?

Last 2 months of every semester: Ramen noodles and PB&J to eat. Sold plasma twice weekly plus a campus job (scars to prove it). Those were the good old days.....
Now, I make more in an hour than I did in a week. I miss those college dorm days.

There were some Indian med school students in an adjacent building who used to spend their deodorant money on bags of dog food to eat.

Not proud of this but I once found myself very drunk, starving, and without food and transportation so I ate a paper plate.

Wasn't college but relative. In 2011 during divorce and bankruptcy I was delivering pizza as a second/night job. There were a few times where I'd take the closing shift to make as much as possible and go straight to the Chase atm after I got off at 1130 to deposit the $50-60 in tips to not overdraft at midnight when my kids' tuition draft would hit. I'd get to bed about 1am and then up for work at my real job for 530am. This went on for 4 yrs.
I'll be damned if I'm ever in a situation like that again and I'll also never forget what it felt like.

Man I ate like royalty at LSU because my meal plan was covered by a scholarship. The 459 and then the 5. shite if I could eat two meals at those dining halls today, I’d do it in a heartbeat. I was very fortunate.

Once, when out yachting with the chaps, I soiled my last ascot and was forced to begin using a necktie for social occasions.

I lived in Tigerland and thought I was pretty poor but only because I insisted on paying for my own place. In hindsight, I was a pretty spoiled upper middle class kid.

My wife grew up poor. I had vehicles, tuition and everything else paid for.

My perspective on my situation growing up is much more clear now in my 40s than it was at 20.

Shower curtains for windows.
Found furniture on the side of the road.
Discovered ramen noodles.
Jeans don't have to be washed after every use.
Longer hair and shaggy beards saves 50% of grooming expenses.
Finding the tolerances to ac/ heating to save money.
Attending on campus events for the free food. (Religious, student gov, etc)

Never had to eat dog food.

But I’d often mix up cheap tuna with Mac and cheese. Put some Tony’s on that, and you got a meal!

Dishwasher detergent for shampoo. It lasted longer because no one was washing dishes.

Dry shave like a boss. It’s even cheaper.

I used to (regularly) eat:
- Saltines with cocktail and pretend it has an oyster on it.
- potato chopped up in a skillet with butter and Parmesan cheese
- I washed my roommates car for a trip to Kenny Roger’s Roasters
- Would eat for 5 days on 1 trip to Mr.Gattis... snuck out with about 50 slices in a napkin

Loved loves LOVED taking showers at girls apartments bc they had all of the nice soaps and stuff. Felt like I was leaving a spa treatment.

Also, had several friends who had gas cards and would let me pay $.50 on the dollar for gas and beer.

Sames friends would charge their books to parents (and charge mine) and I would pay them 1/2 the money.

One time the local grocery store got cases of nearly expired fatty nattys. Beer that wasnt that good to begin with.

But it was 4.99 per case of bottles.

24 beers for 5 bucks.

I filled up five buggies with beer. Buddy and I split the cost. Hundred bucks a piece and we had beer for almost thw whole summer.

I used to keep cartons of cigarettes in my room and would sell them to people at our house parties for $4 a pack.

Made about 17 bucks for every carton.

But mainly I took out 60 grand in student loans even though I was on full scholarship.

Not my brightest move.
