The only way deer die is if they are shot with something 180gr or more moving 3350fps or more!! And if your not willing to spend 2200$ on the scope don’t leave the house.
However, if you know you won’t be shooting past 100yd a good ol 30-30 with a low power variable scope is a good choice. At least for me it is.

the same weapon you use in open country or any normal hunting situation IF you can shoot straight ethically, anyone who uses a different rifle than they are accustom to OR uses a heavier bullet cuz it can "bust through brush" is unethical, go to the range and practice...

.50 BMG with APIT rounds. That tungsten core doesn't care if there's a tree in the way.

I use .30-30, .35, or .45-70 for this task interchangeably, just depending on which I feel like, they were all my Grandfathers and I enjoy shooting them.

I would say buckshot or a slug. From a shotgun.
Next would be a 30-30,
This gun has killed the most whitetail in the USA.

Marlin 336 30-30. Follow me through the woods, and you'll understand
Eta: You wanna mess around and do all kinds of fancy stuff with a new rifle. How about shoot what's been working for 100+ years

Whatever the shortest barreled rifle you have is. I usually use my .30-30 because the gun is so short and handy. A low zoom scope (2-7) or open sights is very nice to have. You dont want to be swinging a 26" barreled 7 mag with a 6-24x scope on it at a deer 20 yards away. My .30-30 had a 2-7 scope forever, now it has a peep sight. Since my tikka is so light and I have a 2.5-8 scope on it, it's kind of unseated my .30-30 for when I hunt a stand in the thick stuff. The scope helps late in the evening.
I hunt with my shotgun and buckshot pretty often as well. The new federal flite control stuff is a game changer the patterns out to 50 yards are fantastic. Inside of 40 yards buckshot is great but it goes to shite quickly after that.
As far as being able to shoot through shite, theres no real answer to that. The idea that a big slow moving bullet is deflected less by obstructions is flawed. A bullet that hits something half way there is going to end up on some random path every time.

Many deer have hit the ground in heavy timber using my Wingmaster and 00 buck.

.243 is the answer. Plows thru brush like a bull dozer and devastates it’s target.

My heavy woods go to is the timely Marlin .444.
They simply don't even twitch an ear when this ole gal barks at them.

Of course 30-30 is the best heavy cover rifle. This is what I have and I hunt heavy timber.
Rifle
30-06 180 grain hornady sst (Tikka with leopold v6)
308 150 grain hornady American hunter (Tikka with leopold v6)
( if I can see more than 100 yards)
Primitive riflle
35 wheelen (traditions with Nikon monarch)
Both the 35 and 30-06 drop em! I’ve never had a deer runoff with those guns/ammo
