We make jokes and moan about how much we spent on our wedding but we don't really regret it

People are terrible at long term financial planning, & get caught up in the moment.

Your friends and family don't live forever either. It's worth the celebration if done right.
Piggybacking off of this, the best weddings/receptions I’ve been to were the cheapest ones where they didn’t try to shove as much shite as possible into them for photo ops.

It’s a young, stupid decision. Older people don’t do this. I got married at 24 and all together, I think around $25,000 was spent. It was really ignorant since at that age you’re paying stuff off, trying to buy a home, etc.
My SO and I are getting married soon. We are just going to justice of the peace then taking a nice vacation to celebrate. We’ve both been married before tho and don’t see the need for going through that process again.

Probably around 10k on the reception alone.
So not a lot. Just feeding 100 people is going to be a couple thousand dollars.

Which is why the wife and I had a medium sized ceremony of reasonable cost, as we had a number of family members who were older and/or infirm, thus unlikely to make it to the next major milestone celebration.
We didn’t rent out St Louis Cathedral and pat O’Brien’s like my cousin did but we still had a good ceremony and reception without putting us or parents in hock.

Im getting married in June and I keep asking myself the same question. I thought i had talked my fiance into using her parents wedding fund to buy a house instead right before I proposed, but as soon as she saw that ring she went into wedding fever mode and spent every damned dime out of that fund. I keep seeing invoices for various things and all I can think about is the ZERO return on any of that money. It sucks.

You think that's a lot. Was this at a Knights of Columbus hall?
If people and their parents can afford it, I see no problem. The average wedding down here seems to be getting to over $30K and I enjoy a damn good party anytime anyone wants to throw one.

Depends on what you mean by old. If you're inviting a bunch of people from your professional networks to your wedding, it can definitely add pressure to do things well.
In our case it was easiest to do a smaller but higher quality wedding. Problem is that the scale wasn't really the problem. Going from 200 to 100 doesn't cut the cost in half, etc.

From my experience the grooms don't give two shits about the wedding day
This wasn't true for me. I couldn't give two shits about the flowers or decorations or shite like that, but I'm glad we had a big one. I have family from all over the country that came in for it....all of my groomsmen were guys that were like brothers to me and now live very far in different states. Everyone converged and had a huge weekend long party and that shite was beyond memorable.
As far as the price tag, her parents gave us $10,000. We argued but they insisted. It was what they had always wanted to do for her so we did it up big. Could the money have been better spent on something else....probably. But the time I had with people who I usually never see from Cali to Florida and every place in between was amazing.

I was more or less estimating, I really don't have no idea on how much was spent. They definitely didn't have it KOC.

*Has great time with free booze and food*
*proceeds to shite on great experience*
The reason people spend so much money on weddings is because of the reception. It’s to thank their guests for being a part of their special day.
If a couple would have a ceremony and a cheap reception, you’d come here saying it was trashy.

Our wedding cost about 3-400 $ and I was bitching about that. We paid for it ourselves but my dad did pay for rehearsal dinner at a nice restaurant. Wife and I ate burgers, her idea, to make it cheaper Everyone else ordered steaks and alcohol.
ETA: My dad is awesome for it and did a really good speech. We enjoyed our wedding and rehearsal dinner
ETA: Holy frick I was wrong. Wife said we spent close to 4K. She said flowers were 3-400 $. I’m dumb. I paid for it and still forgot, been 10 years though. I have a good memory, it’s jut short.

So rehearsal cost more than the wedding....nice. You didn't have a wedding reception?

My wife and I were fine with the church wedding we had with just our parents. Her parents wanted the big one. We had 300 people, an insane band, all the bells and whistles. After the night, we were both so glad we did it. Most fun party we’ve ever had. It was insane.

Would much rather go to courthouse and have a party/reception afterwards
Ummmm. Where do you think the money gets spent? If you are dropping most of your cash before the reception you are doing it wrong.

I’m sure it did. Our wedding was in a church and all but quick. Just cake and finger foods and it was over. We didn’t want a big one, well I didn’t. Just invited close family and 2 friends each. Although many of my firefighter coworkers showed up. It ended up being much bigger than expected. Yea we failed on the having enough food for everyone, big time failed. But everyone was told in advance it was gonna be a quick wedding and no reception. 10 years later we still going strong though.

I had a cheap ceremony and reception, a local JP did the honors and my MIL catered and held the reception at her house. My in-laws gave us a choice, have a big wedding or a down payment on a house. We chose the down payment. Been married now for 25+ years.

If you have a very close knit family and both sides get along, then why not?! Especially if the grandparents are still alive. If not, gtfo and elope... avoid drama and have the day to yourselves.
