Man people like you are about as fun as barefooted soccer with a pineapple.

You one of those types that is gonna pinch every penny til you die a multimillionaire with absolutely no life experience? Sounds very responsible.

If you can afford it and want to do it, go for it. I spent an arse of money on my wedding/reception. Neither of our parents is well off, at all, and they contributed no dollars to the wedding. My relatives and friends still talk about how much fun they had that night. My great uncle was there and it was the last time he was able to visit with and catch up with all the family; if not for the wedding, the last time would have been years before that. I promise he wouldn't have shown up if I got married in a courthouse and had a luau in my back yard for 30 people afterwards.

Might it have delayed that car purchase a year or so? Maybe. Is that money making compound interest for me now? Nope. But I wouldn't go back and change it.

during the planning of my wedding gave me the option to just run off and get hitched somewhere and pocket the rest of it.

my wife wanted the full wedding/reception (i was indifferent), so that’s what we did.

looking back, we both wish we had just taken the cash and did a quick marriage somewhere cheap and stashed the money.

would have been a lot easier getting started in life with an extra $12-$15k in the kitty.

My mother made my sister's wedding dress and the reception was at their home. My dad still bitched about the cost

Her parents should not have to pay for you to get a house. It is a wedding fund, not a "our daughter is marrying someone who can't afford his own hosue".

no, you just don't have 30k that you can spend on a party without missing the money.

Her parents set money aside for their daughter when she was getting married. Do you really think her parents would care what she spent it on as long as it was something fiscally responsible, especially if it was something like a down payment for a house?

Some of you have absolutely no idea feeding 100s of people cost. Throw in free booze and you are looking at well over $20/ head usually. That’s not even that expensive....

So if you are successful as a young couple and you have 2 sets of parents that are successful, and everyone wants to have their friends and family together to celebrate...well that shite costs money. Lol.

Now crazy bands and dresses, that’s a different story. But most of the other costs are just that, what it costs for a lot of people to do something.

Probably around 10k on the reception alone.

Oy vey. You need to get out more old man if you think thats a lot. Did you feel out of place in your carhart suit? Ha

The band alone at my sisters wedding was more than that.

I have no idea what the total was, but I believe my wedding was close to $80k or so.
