I struggled to come up with 30 people that I even knew well enough on my side to invite to our wedding

Yeah they get pricey for sure. I dont know my sisters for sure, but wouldnt surprise me if it hit the 6-figure mark.

Luckily for my family, and whomever is my future wife's family, I'm at the point where idgaf. Make it enjoyable, and tell me where to show up for related things. So i'll let her family decide how much they want to spend. I'm cool with going to city hall. Heck worked for my parents.

she will spend 1000x that on shoes and dresses she believes its a criminal offense to wear more then once so the wedding is a speeding ticket by comparison to the way women waste money

I would agree here.

Or really good money mgmt. So of yall really need to understand how other people live. you hear all the negatives, but dont think about all the others that pull it off well.

Hell how many people out there make their daughters happy with a big reception full of her friends and family, but also some good business associates?? Got to set the groundwork.

we didn't really plan any of it. her mom did and her dad always joked he was just the checkbook

my MIL and our wedding planner picked out bands for us to go see, caterers for us to taste, the photographer and the videographer, etc. so we had the fun part of planning without any of the stress of it.

If a family can afford it spending whatever amount on a wedding is as justifiable as any other non-essential expenditure. What is stupid is the number of people that cannot afford a 30, 40, 50 thousand dollar wedding, but borrow the money, some even taking a second mortgage on their home so their little princess can have her special day.

And thats who yalls wedding was for. Ha. Made her happy i'm sure. Especially since your wife let her, and your FIL just rolled with it.

People saying it's wasted money or bad money mgmt dont get that for some it's more than the money. I'm sure your FIL sat down for a while WAY in advance to work to start freeing up assets just right too, so when time came he was "ok" with it. Ha.

We spent a lot but we could afford it.

In the grand scheme of things I'm not really gonna miss the 50k

Do you buy new or used cars?

I bought a used Camry in 2007. Still drive it. My next car will likely be a new Civic or Carolla

I have zero doubt that you had no problem affording it. Same here. My thing is a wedding was so far down our list to spend 50K on as not to really even register

Non-player character. It's an rpg video game term.

no, you just don't have 30k that you can spend on a party without missing the money.

Some truth there
I think I would still be uncomfortable with my Father in law spending that kind of money. But then again, he might want to give his daughter her day

damn, I thought mine was expensive at around 25k. Ours only had about 100 guests though, and we got a steal on the live band, who is now signed and on the radio. They were fresh out of college and did it for $800. We got so frickin lucky.

50 was definitely more than I wanted to spend, but tbh there weren't many places to trim that would have made a significant difference. In our situation, the fixed costs were high (band, available venues for the number of guests).

Errbody wants to get married in new orleans these days, so the demand for bands and venues is very high. Most of the venues we looked at had very limited available dates with some people having already booked and paid for receptions 18+ months in advance.

We also had a lot of out of town guests so I wasn't about to have them spend all that money to come in town to get married in slidell and have a reception at a windowless hotel ballroom. For us, the choice was doing it the way we did, or not doing it at all (Courthouse weding).

The band was expensive but holy frick they were worth it. They really went all out and we definitely felt we got our money's worth booking them.
