True for wood or gas.

Wood stove if you want to heat a house, and I used to enjoy cutting the wood for exercise.

I didn't bother putting a fireplace or stove in my new house, though.

If vented logs yes but not sure you can even get vented logs now.

Most are ventless now and the put off a lot of heat.

I may be the only one that says gas inside.

Puts off a lot more heat
I have never had a gas fireplace come close to putting off the same heat as a real one

In terms of heat in my experience

1. Wood burning stove

2. Wood fireplace

3. Gas fireplace

Gas is the way to go. Clean and easy. I have an outdoor fire pit for when I want to satisfy my inner pyro.

a ventless puts out as much or more heat than a wood burning fireplace.

We have a newer house with a ventless gas fireplace. It puts off a lot of heat, but of course my tv is above it. The heat is too hot to leave on for long periods for my tv. Per a rep at a brick place, gas is meant to be on for a short period and that’s it. If you want it to enjoy the fireplace, then go with real

Gas Ventless inside. It’s clean, puts off plenty of heat, and the nice logs (not cheap) look good, with glowing embers and everything.

Ive ran my in my other house, with a wood mantle and TV above it, for extended periods without problems with either.

Also, keep in mind the initial cost. I just built and have a gas ventless inside and wood burned on patio. The gas ventless is under $500 with minimal installation (but gas logs are costly), while the wood burner was around $2000 installed. Also the chimney and chimney cap costs, routing, and general roof line appearance.

Real. It's more work but so damn relaxing and you'll enjoy it more.

If I had room for all of the logs inside, it would make it better. I have to keep walking outside to get shite, so it sucks.

I'd still go with a gas starter

I've only had real wood fireplaces so I can't speak to gas ones...I don't mind splitting wood..that's my winter exercise program. I only know that I wish I had a blower on my current wood fireplace to move the heat more. Mom and Dad's had one that brought the air in the bottom and circulated it around the firebox and exhausted the hot air out the top...man that thing would put out some heat!

I have the dual setup. Real with gas starter or clean it out and put the gas log set up in and screw the stainless line over to the fitting. It stays gas log most of the year but for those super cold days we like our real wood fires.

Surprised so many folks voting for gas. I'v had both and can't wait to get back to a real wood fire place. 2 things I hate about gas; 1. it doesn't put out that much heat to me, certainly not heating up most of your house and 2. if I look at a gas fireplace long enough I swear I can see dollar bills going up in flames

The right answer is real wood with a gas starter AND putting in a blower that connects to your HVAC.

get a wood burning fireplace with a set of vented gas logs. They look pretty damn real and if you ever want to switch back to real wood you can. If you buy a gas fireplace there is never an option to convert it to wood. The vented logs I am familiar with are made by rasmussen. Go take a look at their website

My wood fireplace pulls air in and exhausts in living room and all bedrooms, it will heat the house up fast if you build a truly hot fire. Blowers are loud as frick, though.

But, I'll only light that thing if the temp is sustained below 30 and I'm going to be home the entire time. It's a PITA reloading tubs of wood when it's that cold, too.

I've had both... while nothing takes the place of a real roaring, crackling fire, I have come to love being able to light my fireplace in seconds whenever I want and more importantly turn it off whenever I want. The ability to control the size of the fire is also awesome. The fireplace at my house has the ability to be woodburning, but doubt I'm ever going back.

Put the gas tube to use to start your real wood fire. Unless you are really going to turn your heater down and use the fireplace to heat your house, it doesn't matter which one puts off more heat. Real wood for ambiance, gas if you simply want a flame.
