Fireplace inside: real or gas

Trying to decide. Lots of folks I’ve talked to have gas ones and comment that “they put off a lot of heat” but I’m not really sure if I’m concerned about heat as much as the smell and sound of burning wood. The ambiance. Gas is obviously more convenient but it’s just fake.

Real wood! And I have gas logs currently. There is nothing like a real wood fire.

My wife hates a wood fire. You need to know your better half’s feelings before doing one or the other. I made an awesome fire growing up. But when we were dating and she would come over she said it just felt stuffy like it dried her out. We had gas logs in our first apartment and townhouse and she likes those. The convenience of having a remote to turn them in on and off is great. Much like a gas grill, it is fake. But if you’re just needing to warm a room up they are awesome.

So I’m going to have a real wood burner on the patio but like I said, I feel like I’m putting this in for the ambiance. We’re going to have a fully functioning hvac system so I’m not really concerned about providing heat. I understand the convenience of gas but I feel like might as well have just a mantle.
What’s funny is I’ve talked to a lot of people that have built recently and everyone is on gas.

The word you're looking for is ambiance.

People have gotten lazier and many don't want the hassle of having to either chop their own wood or pay to have it delivered. Add to that once the wood is burned there is a good bit of ash to remove from the fireplace and the occasional cleaning of the chimney to rid it of creosote buildup and the potential for a fire in the chimney.
No doubt wood burning fireplaces offer more ambience over the gas fired ones, but they are a lot more work in the long run.

I may be the only one that says gas inside.
Puts off a lot more heat and not near as much of a mess.

Real wood is a PITA. I'm constantly splitting and hauling logs into the house, and I have to worry about them getting wet 10 months out of the year.
Go gas with real wood logs if you want real wood

I’ve had both and I like the convenience and cleanliness of my gas logs. Not planning to go back to wood burning.

I don't have room inside to store a night's worth of wood, so I have to keep going outside to get more. Burning 24hrs is like 1/8 cord too

While I like a real log burner it is really not worth the money and side effects in the deep south in a modern well insulated home.
If dealing with the wood, repainting your ceilings more often, and having everything smell of smoke is worth the twice a year you hear and see a fire then it's for you if not then...

Gas if you want to use them regularly. Real is great but a PITA. You do need to spend a chunk on some good gas logs though. The cheap logs suck

I’ve always been a real fireplace guy but put gas inside my new house and absolutely love it! I have a real fireplace outside to get my smoke smell fix but the gas is too damn convenient not to love

Real wood, always be able to burn.

I prefer gas because I just flick a wall switch and it’s on. I love a wood burning smell but I don’t like it all winter long even when the fireplace isn’t on.

Gas, when I had wood it was such a PITA I didn't even build one in my new house. The house smelled like smoke, floor was covered with bark and moss, and I found that most the heat went straight up the chimney. Like was stated pay for quality gas logs some, some have crushed fire glass for a realistic glowing ember look.
