Wood-burning fire places are not good for heating a home. They are good for heating the are directly in front of them, but typically induce infiltration which causes all other exterior rooms to get cold.

Thanks to the layout of my house my gas fireplace sucks.
House is 1.5 story so it's open to 2 stories in the living room basically.
Heats the shite out of the upstairs

Gas? Why even bother installing that. Get an electric heater if you’re going that route

I disagree. If done correctly they can heat your entire home much better than gas and don't cost anything to operate (if you have access to the wood). I'm a little bias cause I like cutting firewood almost as much as I love burning it.

I burn real wood in my fireplace. Will likely fire it up tomorrow night when this next winter system arrives and it snows.

a gas fireplace is for an apartment or condo.
a house should have a wood fireplace.
my fireplace is all brick, and the brick is all exposed in the house. Once that baby gets rolling, the heat radiates off the brick and the house will be hot. I sometimes have to open the door and let the 40 degree air enter the house to cool it down.
I've got a gas starter, so starting a fire is very simple. Not having the gas starter would be a real pain in the arse, and i could see where people would rather a gas fireplace over wood b/c of that.
Nothing like the sounds and smells of a wood fire. I'm not going to complain about chopping wood, or tending my fire, or sweeping up the ash, but i get why some people are so lazy they'd complain about that. Not really lazy i guess, just don't appreciate the wood fire enough to offset the very minor inconvenience it causes for some.

Never scene one that wood.
My next house is going to have a wood fireplace in a sun room or screened porch but not in the house.
