Congrats to you and Roots. Strong work. We’ll need those race reports on our desk by Monday.

Since Roots is the Sugar Land TD.com Alpha Dog I'll do the admin work for him...a straight road with subdivisions on your left, pass a strip mall , turn around...Roots had to do it twice...brutally bland but I'll never complain about an in-person event.

For sure. I’m signed up for a marathon in a few weeks. A small, local race. It should still go. Really just looking forward to an in-person event again.

Thanks Fellas! Glad it's over with. As y'all know, being tied to a plan for 20 weeks takes a toll. Such a relief and weight off my back. The race is the easiest part.

RSand covered the race Logistics; pretty boring suburbia pavement pounding. I finished with an official time of 3:27:50. Beat my goal of 3:30 and negative split the back half, with the last 3 miles my quickest. That said, I could have done much better. Mainly due to being super conservative for the first 20 because my damn HR was reading ridiculously high. I was wearing arm sleeves and I'd noticed recently when I wear them that they cause my wrist based HR to be abnormally high. So in my head I knew it was wrong, but what if it wasn't? I'd for sure bonk. Once I shed the sleeve at 21 and my HR got back in normal range (reading at least), I had the confidence to kick it up a notch.

Also, I haven't ran with music in years, but sitting around the hotel room on Saturday and knowing how boring a Marathon can be, I decided to download some music to my watch. Not like I would have to carry a phone or anything extra, other than earbuds in my waist belt. Needless to say, some Tool blaring starting mile 16 gave me an extra push for the last 10. I'll be saving the music for longer races only now, it's such a performance enhancer for me.

Looking ahead, no official race plans as of now. My plan calls for 4 really light weeks of recovery. Not sure I'll do the full 4, but definitely not in any hurry to do anything too intense. I have a chick I train with trying to talk me in to La. Half sub 1:30 attempt, but not sure on that.

Also, our 5 year Turnaround at work starts 3/15 and lasts till June 6th, so I will be doing zero running during that time. For those unfamiliar, it consists of shutting our unit down, Maintenance, repairs, upgrades, etc... in a nutshell it's 7 days a week, 14 hours a day. Not leaving time for anything else... but counting money!

With that, I'm thinking Woodlands 2022 may be my next Full. I would say La., but I'd rather get more time to train in the Winter than having to start heavy in the Fall to be ready for Jan.

Long post, but the endorphins are still flowing and figured I owed it to y'all, as the support here is top notch. Couldn't ask for a better training group.

... and RSande is in full quarantine mode looking like Che Guevara with the locks and beard.

Some great runs put down this weekend.

I got 14 in around White Rock Lake in Dallas this weekend and it was amazing.

I get so jealous of the public recreational infrastructure offered in places like Texas and NW Arkansas when I visit.

It was SO refreshing to have so many other like-minded people out doing their thing.

My wife and I started at 8am and I cannot count how many serious cycling groups and running groups were out. Not to mention the casual walkers and joggers, rowing crews on the lake, etc. People were doing things! We have small "strong" communities in NWLA, but nothing like what I experienced there. It was such a mental boost and the new scenery helped as well.

Good job Roots, instead of doing that half, there was a group doing their own virtual marathon around a neighborhood not too far from you in Telfair. I'm just prepping for a trail in 2 weeks.

Thanks for the info on the watches and I’m leaning towards a Garmin 245 music. I’ve decided to set milestones for myself and a watch will be after my first five mile run. I was going to wait to buy new shoes, but got some Brooks Revel shoes for $35 on clearance at academy for my first pair. I’ve only been at it for a little over two weeks, and I ran 3 miles today at a 9:44 average so not that far off (my pace is all out of whack).

Keep it up potato chip. It'll get easier. I have the 645 music and love it.

Had a race in March already canceled.

That fact that races involving less than 200 participants are being canceled is ridiculous.

I've never hit the wall before. I've never run farther than a marathon though.

What are you referring to? Distance you hit a wall on a daily run, weekly mileage, or race distance?

of course "hitting a wall" has different meaning to everyone. what is yours?

Good point. I wasnt clear. I've been on 6-7 mile days with a day off a week. Been at this since mid-December. Run speed and enjoyment have tapered off this last week or so. I'm hoping to make this a one time monthly goal then transition back to a smarter run regimine February and beyond.
The wall in my case is around week six of once weekly rest days.

Going to depend upon your fitness level, speed, and whatever else you have going on in your life

But running the same amount at the same pace pretty much every day is going to get old quickly when the volume is even remotely difficult for you

Finally decided to pony up the money and hire a coach for a few months. I got tired of trying to develop my own training based on books and internet research.

Found a guy online that felt the most comfortable and understanding of where I am and where I want to be. He wants to really push for some bigger goals than what I have had for myself which is nice. Luckily there is a HM here in town in March and that gave us exactly 10 weeks to train, so we will see.

kballa,

I hope it works for you. For some it does & for some it doesn't.

I've made recent jumps with my coach by being more vocal and understanding my body comes before his science/advice. It works for us.

After a few virtual calls of "interviewing" him, I felt comfortable enough to commit for a few months. He thinks I haven't really pushed myself hard enough during training and what I thought were tempo runs or threshold runs were more medium effort when he looked through my run history.

He's added in more weight training than what I was doing and the midweek runs are more specific which is nice.

Roman Candle;

As Joey stated running the same-ish distance and pace 6 days is going to get old. hopefully you are at least running different routes.
I look at running two ways. Running for fun and running to achieve a goal. In general I simply enjoy running and it has become a habit more than a hobby. More of my time is spent running to hopefully reach a goal I've set and I've come to the conclusion / acceptance that not every run is going to be fun and there will be days that I don't really feel like it but I'm still going to get it done.

Work on finding a good balance b/w fun running and goal running. mix up your runs: tempo, intervals, slow and long, local group run, etc.
