Big applause to everyone running today. I ran my first race of the year, the Frostbite 15k. Starting temp was 55° and the course had a number of hills. I finished just under 1:20, which I find acceptable for my current conditioning but about 40 seconds/mile off my half marathon pace. I guess I gotta get back to work on that.

I’ve seen multiple people drink cokes at aid stations instead of gels or fruits. I think there’s a school of thought that takes the attitude that calories are calories and a gel isn’t any better than a coke. I’m not saying I agree with it

Finished in 2:13... pleased for not having run this year. I had battled shin splints in December. First one in the books! Super excited and feel accomplished.

I’m good with that during a race. I’d say that sugar is sugar no matter the source.

But this was about 2-3 hours before start time. He had 820 calories of refined sugar and hydrogenated oils and whatever other crap goes into pop tarts. Again, he’s the PhD and won the Vegas marathon recently, but it seems like an odd choice to me. Like asking to have a sugar crash or stomach cramps.

Watched my Dad down a coke an hour before an 8.2 mile race with 1,000 feet elevation. He finished under an hour and is in his late 50’s. Different people just need different things. I usually take a few gu’s during long runs. Today I ate a cliff bar during a 20 mile training run though. I liked that a lot better.

There is coke and red bull at aid stations for an ironman. It works. Glucose and caffeine. A lot of people will use flat coke so it doesnt bother your stomach.

I need to go run off this angry energy flowing through my body.

The gods are really testing my dry January motivations right now.

Yeah the PI obviously sucks but we had plenty of opportunities and settled for FGs. You gotta get 7 at home more often than not. Hurts for sure.

Gonna sleep it off and may drown my sorrows tomorrow by ordering a pair of 4%’s for the couple races I have upcoming. Super Bowl fund is now useless. Lulz

Just saw that Des finished the La Half in 01:14:00

Congrats.

Finished the Full yesterday. Running with my wife we hit our goal. It wasn't to see how fast we could run it. It was to see how fast we could recover from it.

I feel fine today. I'm not walking funny. I didn't develop any new injury. I can walk up and down steps like it was leg day at the gym. I'm able to keep up with the kids afterwards. So I have no complaints. The weather was absolutely perfect too.

A lot can be said for going out there and pulling back, stop and visit with family that come out to watch, and be able to function the next day. We didn't start a stop watch or check out times yet. It was for her to check off no. 19 for Houston. One more to go and then it's Halfs from here on out.

How was the weather for running? I was a little depressed I couldn't run yesterday, but then was happy when the forecast said it'd be frigid. Then I got up an moving out of the house around 9:30 and it felt like it would have been a great day for a run. Granted might have felt different around 6 a.m..

2 miles Saturday and 3 miles yesterday after a 5 week hiatus. I'm sore . I think it's mostly because my cardio is still there (swimming and biking), but the legs weren't ready to run at my tempo pace. Felt super easy while running, sore the next day.

It was frigid at the start but turned into perfect weather. I ran the first 3 miles in pajama bottoms. But as soon as the sun came up and started hitting you, it felt great.

I was worried about the cold/wind but it was pretty much a non factor for me. Decided against tights and just wore shorts, long sleeve and a skull cap. I wore gloves and my hands were OK during the race but were numb for awhile after. Had to defrost them with a heater vent in my truck before I could use my phone, etc. Despite my thoughts going in, I’d prefer to race in the conditions yesterday than 85 degrees and humidity/dewpoint.

I really don’t like pants unless we’re dealing with freezing temps. Last night I wore shorts and long socks at 40 degrees and everybody I was with regretted their pants a mile in.

I got my last 20 mile run in before the marathon in 3 weeks.
It was cold out, but made for running 20 miles OK. The wind was fierce, otherwise perfect. Just wore some coldgear outfits and a hat and gloves.

I did have to run slow so I could finish OK. I'll still need to work on nutrition, I was getting hungry towards the end.
