Can't believe I'm just now discovering the H/F board.

So, I'm not a runner by any means, but decided that this year I would train to run the Crescent City Classic. I've only done a couple Happy's runs before, so 3.1 miles is the longest i've ever run.

Started a training program via runkeeper. I ran 5 miles last week, which marks the longest distance i've ever run non-stop.

My goal is <10 min/mile pace.

Happy to be following this thread now!!

Awesome and glad to have you. Good luck in training!!

If you’re interested there’s a Strava group (similar to runkeeper)

Not to sound like a condescending dick, but don’t be intimidated by any times or paces you see on here. This thread is the most encouraging thread on TD and nobody will ever disparage another runner.

Go get it!

Good to have you, man. Let us know if you need help finding the group on Strava. It’s called “TD.Com”

Happy to have you, brother.

I started with couch to 2 miles and held that distance a few times a week for about 3 months. Then 2 mile to 6 miles. Then somehow got convinced to run a half and now I've run two halfs and a full in the last 11 months.

You will amaze yourself at how far you can run, but you've got to practice patience.

That's a great goal. Is the CCC a full marathon? If so, don't worry about your time goal. Keep your training up and see how it goes and where you are. Focus on finishing. It's just your first. Like most people who run, you'll run it and then want to run more.

Ah. Well. Still a respectable distance for sure. As a local run coach told me, anything 1600 meters or over is a long distance race and should be treated as such.

Signed up for another 10 mile trail race for February 16th.

Got the bug again.

Yeah it’s only a 10k but for me that’s far! Great ice breaker race

Couple of questions out of curiosity.

Where is your coach getting their splits?
Why is it so specific for every mile of every run?
What coach did they train under while here?
What distance is this schedule for?

My reasoning for the questions.
If there’s an exact formula to dial in specific training pace per specific distance, that’d be huge for me. I have only been able to work out approximates and my margin is huge.

I look at your training schedule and it’s incredibly fascinating.

Thanks!

No need to say "only," a 10k is an awesome achievement! I'll warn you, the CCC will play mind tricks on you. The middle miles are a straight shot down esplanade so you can see mile markers long before you get to them. And then you can see the finish line at city park but still have a mile to go around the outside. Don't let it trip you up!

Pool jogging this morning while the wife swims laps around me and the dog watches with a bemused expression. Love injury rehab!

Nah. It's on the "Monkey Trails" at Eddie Jones State Park up here in NW LA.

The Monkey Trail is probably one of the more difficult trails in LA. It has some really nice hills.

LINK

It's part of a 3 race trail series.

I'm debating doing the one I posted if my wife is up for a trip to Houston. Can maybe package it up with a trip to visit her Mom who lives nearby. Just a tough sell with a 3 month old.

I've also never done a trail race and can probably count on one hand the number of trail runs I've ever done. Not for lack of want, just lack of access around here.

i was suspect of this statement, but then i stalked your stomping grounds on strava then compared that to alltrails (a good tool for finding off the beaten path trails) and sure enough, you got nothing around you. Denham Springs and BR look like it has a few good ones.

Tickfaw State Park looks fun, but i can't tell how far that is from you.

Not sure I can answer all those

We sat down at the beginning for like an hour and a half, went over my race results and some previous runs recorded in Strava. I told him what my goal was (sub 3 hour marathon), when my next race was, where I thought I had gone wrong, etc.

I believe he got initial splits based off my race time from November, and has been adjusting based on my feedback and results I send.

I don’t know why so specific (not all the runs have been that way). He did say this week as we are starting my build we will start narrowing the range and bringing more of my runs closer to goal pace. (We’ve been trying to build base while also increasing lactate threshold, which we have succeeded at IMO)

His head coach was The Goat
