In the video, Dr. Beth Keegstra, of El Camino Hospital in Los Gatos, is seen doubting Samuel Bardwell’s account of what happened to him, saying, “You are the least sick of all the people who are here, who are dying. So you put your head up. Don’t try to tell me you can’t move. Come on. Sit up.”

She tries to force Bardwell to sit up by pulling at his arm, even though he clearly tells her that he is unable to.

“You want us to wheel you to your house in a gurney?,” she asks him.

quote:

Bardwell was hospitalized Monday after experiencing an anxiety attack after a basketball practice. His father, Donald, said Samuel has a history of anxiety attacks, for which he takes Klonopin. It treats seizures, panic disorder, and anxiety. Samuel had not been taking the sedative leading up the Monday anxiety attack.

quote:

Keegstra even accused Donald and his son of coming in for drugs.

“She said, ‘I know why you people are here, you people who come here for drugs,’ and I said ‘What do you mean you people?’” Donald said. “She was rambling on so angrily that’s why I pulled out my phone.”

quote:

This story is pretty much is Exhibit A about the racism black people experience in the medical world. And one has to wonder if Keegstra has done this before.

I mean, if you're not going to give the man drugs, you could have at least started the damn conversation. Such a wasted opportunity.

Not unusual. I have had doctors and nurses treat me like a damn criminal for coming to see them for several things. A back injury for one.

The son also claims to be in cataplexic state from anxiety yet can calmly explain to the doctor what his condition is. He’s not even faking going through withdrawals very well.

This isn’t a racism thing. A lot of doctors are just shitheads, especially ones in the ER

Los Gatos is a very very wealthy city. I bet she sees a ton of housewives looking for pills. I doubt she was being racist.

ER doctors have it really bad. At least 1/4 of their cases are people looking for drugs. And they can lose their license for stuff like that. Then at the same time they have high stress cases of life and death at a moments notice, very serious situations. ER doctors end up being super cynical and constantly at high stress levels. A lot of them burn out. It’s a rough job, even with the money they make

I worked in an ER for 8 years, LOL at the idea that this is specific to black people.

Doctors very often treat patients they think are drug seekers in very sarcastic tones.

I don't understand one thing, the patient has anxiety and as a result of the anxiety, he couldn't sit up? Is that normal?

It is very suspicious if a patient is known to have anxiety and just happens to "run out of medicine" and goes to the ED to get more.

I'm not saying any or all of that makes what the Dr did right, just saying that is generally how it goes, it's not out of the ordinary at all.
