there's a ton of over-exaggeration going on, or I'm some type of 1-million anomaly with pools. I put in a gunite/salt water pool 4 years ago this August. To date I have only added salt, Muriatic Acid, and changed out a pack of cartridge filters. Cleaning takes about 20-30 minutes a week, although I have to admit I don't have any trees around me so that helps out a bunch. I clean the tiles and deck 2-3 times year, which takes up an additional weekend day or so each time. I'm sure eventually I'll get hit with some issues that will take time/money, but I just don't see what all the fuss is about maintaining a pool.

Almost my exact situation
Mine too, except I strongly prefer a chlorine pool to saltwater and my filter is DE.

We had a beautiful pool in our last house. The backyard had several big trees that kept part of the pool shady which was great during the hottest part of the summer. However, it was time-consuming to maintain and I spent a lot on replacing equipment. The kids would get so excited to use the pool every year they’d try to start swimming in March or April and they’d be burnt out by July. The city where we lived had a ban on diving boards but we had one that was grandfathered in. The neighborhood kids used to come and wait in line to use it and we had some fun parties. Shortly after we moved, the new owners had to tear up and replace the stone decking because the soil settled/shifted. The diving board got ripped out. Sad. I wouldn’t want to own a pool again.

copper is the way to go.
Copper is a good algaecide when it is kept in solution. It is not a sanitizer.

And then got hit with a $7000 broken filter/pump issues first year
7k for pump and filter issues would be the actual cost multiplied several times even on the highest end equipment.

I pay $375 a year for our family to belong to a swim club. They clean and maintain everything. We can bring our own booze and food and they even have BBQ grills. Much better

Are you my dad?
Well to be fair, after that night at the fraternity house, there are about 50 of us that could be your "real" dad. The guy you call Dad is just the cuck that your mom conned into marrying her.

She won't strip for you indoors?
She's skinny dipping so the boy next door can watch, not for you.

Built in with quality pumps and a equipment. Never a problem. Go cheap and you are setting yourself up for bad times!!!

Thanks. You have honestly helped convince me to not do it.

Sometimes I yell "fire" when she's in the shower so she will run into the bedroom naked.

pools are like boats. u dont wanna be the guy that has one, you wanna be the guy with the best friend that has one
Nah...I prefer having my own stuff. Love boating and love my pool. I'm not relying on anyone else for the enjoyment in my life. I think the folks that bitch about a pool or boat are people that have a problem with maintaining their items......or they're lazy....or they're financially straped and the financial burden of owning either eats at them. I'm none of the above.
And, I hate being stuck on someone else's boat.

I kinda hate this thread. We are closing on a house in the next couple of weeks. The house we are buying has a pool. We have two small kids though, so I'm hoping we (they) will get plenty of enjoyment out of it.

All about usage. Spend $40K and never use the pool it becomes a financial hole with maintenance cost driven by lack of use. Same with a boat. I have always owned my own boat and enjoy the process of maintaining it and also use quite regularly

I've owned an inground pool for 7 years. Minimum maintenance. We still love it and use it all the time.

our pool is about 11 years old. In the last 2 years we have swam in it maybe 6 times. I have replaced the main pump, PCB board for the control system, polaris cleaner, booster pump for the cleaner and the board for the chorine generator in that time. Once the kids got to be in high school we used it less and less. I'm sure the heater will be due in the next year or two. If I built a house today I'd skip the pool.
