We have a 20x40 gunnite pool. It was put in in 1957, we have lived here for 26 years. Love it. We have gone through periods where we didn't use it as much, but it still looked nice. Tried saltwater, but went back to chlorine, it was easier for me. Last year the pump motor burned up, I got a new one online and rebuilt the pump section myself. Total bill $350.

Is it better to own an above ground pool because it's easier to dispose of when you no longer want it?

I ran a completion pool on grad school, and I despise everything there is about pools.

Naturally my wife has fought me tooth and nail to get one.

We are closing on a house in the next couple of weeks. The house we are buying has a pool.

I am probably in the same boat as you, just a month or 2 behind. I am in the house hunting process. In my last house, my wife wanted to build a pool. I absolutely refused. I think they are gigantic money pits, as this thread clearly proves. We have been back and forth and sometimes the arguments got a little heated. The compromise would be that if we ever moved, we would buy a house with a pool. I guess let some other sucker pay for that install. I got one small kid so hopefully she will love it and I will be pushing my wife in it every day whether she wants to or not just because she had to have it.

Mother built a pool after my father died. I guess he didn't want one either. He added a pool house type building next to the garage and put a pool table in there, but built no pool. After ours was built my mom put a heater with it. When it got cold it looked like a geyser rising out of our yard. When she got the gas bill, heater gone.

Joining a country club is actually a cheaper option.

Shite man, not only did I belong to a CC for golf that had a mini water park with 2 pools, a health club with one, we actually have a neighborhood pool 2 blocks away that I get charged for upkeep just for living in this village. I generally won the not getting a pool in the backyard arguments.

If you can’t afford a pool guy, you shouldn’t have a pool
