Non alumni following college sports?

Maybe I went to school up north but am I weird in thinking that it's weird to be passionate about a college team you didn't go to? I've never understood this.
MLB, NBA, and NFL are much better products to find a niche. Why root for some kids screwing around when you have nothing vested?
Just asking?

My father was a die hard LSU fan and was a LSU alumni. Sorry I'm not going to stop cheering for LSU after I spent my entire life cheering for them just because I couldn't afford the ridiculous out of state tuition.

Are you not sure where you went to school?

Seriously? How so? To pander to a bunch of nonsensical politicized PR acts?
Just because you may be alumni doesn't make you a better fan. It may put you in positions to better support the team financially or by other means.
You're sounding like you want to pass judgement on fans who, for whatever reason, did not attend college but love the school and sport. There's nothing wrong with that, at least in the south!

I've been watching the Saints for almost 30 years and I never played for them.

I thinks it's great that the La Tech graduates that I know are some of the most rabid LSU fans around.

I kinda agree
Lots of Gonzales trash are LSU fans

You can have the jersey wearing dude-brahs that litter NFL stadiums. I went to my first Saints game since Katrina a few weeks ago and couldn’t believe the level of trash in the building. It was ridiculous.
As for the product. There is more energy in the stadium of a Wednesday night MAC match up than in any NFL stadium until the playoffs.

Pretty much consistent with all Deep South and Texas colleges.
And we all likely knew someone from our town that played

No clue. I'll ask my staff at tomorrow's teleconference.

I couldn't get into lsu but I've been an lsu fan for a long time (since 2003) If you had to go to college to like a team then they wouldn't sell the memorabilia at walmart (and they got some good lsu over there too baws)

I follow Auburn Athletics because a professional mentor tuned me on to the athletic program there - pull for them on the regular.

I’ve paid taxes in this state for decades. Even if I hadn’t gone to LSU, I’ve certainly paid enough into it that I’m entitled to cheer for them.

If you went to school up north why are you an LSU fan?

I'm a huge Alabama fan although I attended Georgia Tech. My dad and my youngest sister went to Alabama. Sadly, my oldest sister went to Awburn. I'm sorry, but your logic is flawed.

It is slightly weird to be passionate about a team you have no connection to. I've got a friend who's die hard Miami Hurricanes fan even though he's never even been to Miami. There are a bunch of teams I root for, sort of a casual fan, but I'm only passionate about LSU.

You dont sound like you care about any sport when you refer to it as a product.
A lot of people (especially me) feel no connection to professional sports due to free agency.
College sports is more competative due to the amount of teams, the chance to witness a cinderella team come out of no where and make a run towards a championship (mainly basketball and baseball).
At the pro level there really arent that many surprises after week 4 or 5. You can make the playoffs with a losing record.
Millionaires strike because they want more when all they really do is play the same game millions of parent pay money so their kids can play (NFL, MLB and especially NHL).
In college football the stakes are higher on each game. There has only been one 2 loss champion.

Yep. I'm in the same boat. Except it was my mom, 5 uncles, and an aunt. Especially considering Florida had very cheap instate tuition.

Bama would have to reduce the size of their stadium by approximately 100,000 seats

A lot of people go to colleges that don’t have football teams.
I went to Loyola and UNO- and was always an LSU fan (like just about everyone who went to college or not around here).
There’s probably 10 times more LSU fans that didn’t go there than people who were actual students there. Heck, probably a lot more than that.
