There are many reasons a non alumni would follow a college sports team:
1. They were raised supporting that college team, but couldn't afford to go to that college when they got older.
2. They live in a state that doesn't have any major professional sports teams like Alabama and Mississippi.
3. Went to a college that didn't have a football team.
4. Went to a college that has a really bad football team.
5. Their in state professional sports teams suck.
There are plenty of other reasons, but those are just a few off the top of my head.

The real answer as to why it is more popular in the south is that really until the mid-sixties there were no major league pro franchises in the south, while colleges were actively playing from the turn of the century. Newspaper coverage and radio broadcasts of pro sports were few and far between, while the local sports coverage was of the college teams.
Therefore people began following college teams, and it became generational. People in Ohio root for the Browns not because of the quality product they put on the field, but because their Grandfather did and that is what they're exposed to in their local media markets.
It's not a difficult thing to wrap your mind around. What's really weird is that people give a shite about what other people do in their free time.

He could be, I don't know him.
Kids are a bit different. They need to dream and plan for their future. There is a point where it's not realistic and they need to adjust to that. I have no idea about your kid and if it is realistic for him. That's your job.
Something like high school juniors/seniors die hard rooting for Alabama when they live in Louisiana and most likely can't even get into Delgado should probably re-evaluate things to something realistic.
Level of fandom comes into play too. Anything casual I would retract my previous statements.

Exactly, if you grow up watching and rooting for a college team, that doesn't necessarily mean that's the college you will end up attending, so what then ? Well according to the OP you're supposed to stop rooting for that college team I guess.

and if you never go to college...you're fricked, you don't get to be a fan.

Bama would have to reduce the size of their stadium by approximately 100,000 seats
Couldn't wait for a Barner to jump all over Bama's sidewalk fan count...

And this what happens when you think the way you think is the only way to think. You’re not taking into account other factors. There’s a high school kid here in Louisiana that loves Bama. His parents graduated from small schools in Alabama and moved here. They took him to Bama games since he was little, and now he’s a huge fan.
In your world, this shouldn’t happen?

Maybe I went to school up north but am I weird in thinking that it's weird to be passionate about a college team you didn't go to? I've never understood this.
I grew up in a family, town, parish, region that was obsessed with all things LSU. For 18 years I was obsessed with all things LSU. When life hits at 18 and I find myself slumming it at Nicholls State, are you insinuating I should have just cut all ties with LSU? That would be infinitely more weird than what you think is weird.

He's a junior/senior in high school and still a massive Bama fan that's also dumber than rocks? Sure, he should figure out something better to do with his time, like get educated.

I joined the Army right out of High School and never went to college.
Guess I’m not allowed to be a fan of any college team.

Ive had family memebers go to Harvard, NYU, Sewanee, and Millsaps. ALL of them wear LSU all the time and come home for games yearly. They had the opportunities and cash to go where they did--good for them. But they were raised here and cheered for LSU since they were diapers. I think one of them went to the Harvard-Yale game ONCE to see what all the big deal was. He was like "meh" and flew home for LSU-Bama game.

Notre Dame has a small enrollment and huge (probably the largest) fan base...aren't they in the North?

I joined the Army while still in high school, actually went to basic training the summer between my junior and senior years, then graduated high school then advanced training and off to my first post, then Desert Storm happened, after which I was ordered to Princeton. Yes it was an actual order LOL, I'm not sure if I would have got in trouble for refusing, but who's gonna take that chance? I went to Princeton as ordered. Kinda weird, I did my basic training in New Jersey and then ended up in New Jersey for college as well.

I appreciate you putting Sewanee with NYU and Harvard.

There are people cheering for high school teams who have no affiliation with the school and do not have children who have attended the school.
Let that sink in.

Had a friend commit to LSU over Texas in 2002. I’ve been an LSU fan ever since. Had he committed to Texas I’d be a longhorn fan.

I went to school at the place that gave me a scholarship, not the team I rooted for.
And what if you go to a college that doesn't have athletics? You aren't allowed to watch college football anymore?
I think the weirdest thing, is why are sports linked to academic institutions at all anymore? For the most part, the "student athlete" is a complete joke.
