re: Jeff Grimes is a BIG Problem

I've lead the charge on this subject for several years now, but the majority of my posting is early in the morning when I get home from work, so I don't know how many people are seeing the posts.
Grimes is incompetent in both recruiting OL talent and coaching them up.
He has no clue on how to bring this OL up to an SEC and more importantly, an SEC Championship level.
We are so far behind Bama in this area, it's ridiculous!
It's imperative that there is an immediate change here in the off-season before we can get this thing moving forward. (I'm pretty sure O knows this)
Occam's Razor. (The simplest explanation for a problem is usually the correct one).........

Bring back Coach Searels or Coach Stud

I believe you have to start somewhere in trying to evaluate why the OL is struggling so much, and if solid improvements are not made, then Grimes has to go.

I have maligned Studrwra in many posts here pointing out our OL troubles started under him and then slowly snowballed and went uncorrected.
The sad part is Stud is a great technical coach. He also was/is quite demanding in the strength department. I always thought of him as an 'ok' recruiter and didn't like the fact that he was over N La.
His troubles at LSU started, in my mind, when he filled in at OC. First of all, he sucked at OC but then there's the 'Miles interference' debate. But his recruiting, never weak but never strong, fell off significantly. And that was the root of the problem. I think his availability to both coach up and motivate to the weight room fell off too simply due to too much to do.
I've always thought of WR and OL as the toughest position coaches. I just don't see how one can coach the OL and be a coordinator without one suffering.
At tOSU he's had mixed results with good ypc averages but too many sacks. How much of that is the system both helping and hurting those numbers, I don't know.

Go get Rob Sale or Kevin Mawae
Rob Sale would leave Arizona NOW to be LSU oline coach. Plus his recruiting would shut down Alabama in NE Louisiana, being that he is from Monroe.

I cannot recall a streak like this since before 2000 where an LSU QB had to run for his life on every play like we are seeing now. Seriously. It's almost unbelievable to me it's so BAD!

Don't forget it was O who changed the weekly practice schedule

Grimes is a fantastic recruiter, but that gets negated when they transfer out.

Here is why the Dline is not O's Fault: He wasn't hired until AFTER the 2015 signing class. We have literally 1 DL on the team from either of those classes and that is Deondre Clarke, a career backup. O was only on staff for 2016 and 2017 classes which include Rashard Lawrence, Ed Alexander, Glenn Logan, Tyler Shelvin, Neil Farrell, and Justin Thomas. You can't Blame O for having no true Juniors or Seniors on this team. That was Brick Haley, John Chavis, and Les Miles's fault.
Official request for you to make another thread with this as the topic.
There is fair criticism of O to be found, but logic like this is sorely needed around here.

Unfortunately rational arguments that excuse O from any blame for our struggles aren't welcome on the rant
Hell one guy got offended at this thread.

Moffit is also a problem. We have been handled at the line against the better teams. We need a younger hungrier motivated Strength Coach.

quote:About the only hope for this season is for Etling to have a dream in which he's able to drop back, peruse the field, and throw to his third option receiver without being pressured. He can then go back and explain said dream to Coach O and Grimes including the lineup and blocking scheme.

Disclaimer: Lineup must be comprised of members of current roster, and the receiver is open.

I think you're touching more on what's going on. It's a culmination of things. 1) different blocking schemes and offense 2) we are stuck with the miles philosophy of guards being converted to tackles and that has been a fiasco 3) these linemen aren't either living up to their billing or they were bad when they got here and finally the coaching "might" not be up to par.

Maybe losing 9 o line scholarship players over last 2 yrs has something to do with the play this yr. shite happens, O will just have to deal with it.

Just posted this in another thread but it's obviously relevant here:

But don't let facts get in your way. Lol. I will agree though, the line play this year has been terrible. But I just think it's lazy to immediately say Grimes needs to be fired. You can only piss with the cock you got.

I'm seeing several threads calling for Grimes' head. Riddle me this: how did LSU have what was widely considered the best O-line in the country last year then? Did Grimes suddenly forget how to coach?

PFF released its awards for the 2016 season, and the Tigers earned the title of No. 1 offensive line in all of college football.
“As a collective unit, no offensive line performed better than that of the LSU Tigers in 2016,” Josh Liskiewitz wrote.
quote:
LSU’s offensive line play also set up a dominant rushing attack. Derrius Guice and Leonard Fournette rush for a combined 2,230 yards and 23 touchdowns. Both backs averaged 6.5 yards per carry or more.
“Not surprisingly, the success of LSU’s run game can be directly attributed to the outstanding play of the offensive line,” Liskiewitz wrote. “Tiger runners averaged 6.6 yards per carry on the season, and earned 46.8 percent of their yards before initial contact.”
quote:
Liskiewitz also noted that both Clemson and Alabama got less than 41 percent of their rushing yards before contact, making LSU’s mark even more impressive.
“With Pocic and Boutte both graduating and onto the next level, the Tigers are unlikely to duplicate this year’s effort in 2017,” Liskiewitz wrote.

Our Oline was ranked as the number one unit in the SEC and was top 5 in the country last year.

Moffit has been a good trainer for a long time, but lately LSU Looks like their give out starting the 4th quarter! Going to be a long season!

Considering that PFF is worse than a bling gyspy using a magic eight ball to rank anything, that really means nothing. Anyone who actually watched LSU football those years knows those lines were not good.

Trenchers signed by Miles prior to O's arrival, some playing, some Miles and Ed couldn't keep, some maybe never had a shot.
The 2016 class of OL/DL was Miles, and I don't see how you credit it to CEO 8 months prior to interim and RC for only 3wks or so before '16 NSD.
