I'm baffled by all these posts saying The Ring. What was so scary about it? I personally found the premise laughable.

Glad someone mentioned the hospital scene in Exorcist III. The less you know about it ahead of time, the better. Don't watch it on YouTube, just wait til you can see it on a bigger screen.

While I don't consider it a "scary" movie, Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer has some scenes that I can't un-see to this day. Thanks to the home invasion scene, I always lock my doors, even in the daytime, lol...

Most horror movies I re-watch a few years later, I wonder what the hell was it that scared me so much. The ones that still grab me, though, are the ones with a basic-sounding synth/organ score....something about that music always creeps me out.

I found someone from my generation. Those are the two I thought of other than the obvious Poltergeist and The Exorcism.

Salem's Lot

This. Of course this was on TV in the late 70's so my parents thought it would be ok for us to watch. They thought anything on network TV would be ok. I think I was only about 8 years old. Had a window in my room only a few feet from my bed. I could not go to bed without thinking when I looked at the window, the vampire kid would be floating there.

The ones you see when you are a kid mess with you the most. We got cable TV in about 1981 and I sneaked and watched The Shining and Poltergeist. Bad decisions.

As an adult, it is movies like Jacobs Ladder and 1408 that mess with me.

THIS is the reason I will never have a bed facing a window. Never.

That is considered one of the scariest scenes of all time. It just didn't really do anything for me.

Halloween ( the original)

I was very young when I saw this and that shite gave me nightmares for years. The mask, the slow arse walk and that damn music screwed me up.

When I was a teen, there was a movie called "Evil Speak". It was early 80's. It dealt with computers when home computers first came on the market.

I still haven't tried to rewatch The Exorcist since I watched it when I was a pre-teen. Just won't do it.

The Exorcist was certainly the most haunting and memorable. The book is a must read to really go down the rabbit hole.

The first couple of Friday 13ths were possibly the scariest as far as tension and shock value.

Aliens ruined me on the entire horror movie genre. It's the only movie I tried to watch multiple times on tv as an early teen, and couldn't even make it to the end. I finally did as an adult, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

1974: Don't be afraid of the dark.

The ending scared me to chills. I had to sleep on the floor next to my parents bed.

1978: Coma :

Could not sleep after watching that movie at the theater. I was 11 years old.

1979 : Prophecy : still scared to watch that movie.

I can't watch 2001 alone. The chanting (?) voices when they show the obelisk will literally prevent me from falling asleep that night

Yeah, that one scared me almost as badly as Salem's Lot. I can still remember those little demons whispering. Phantasm was another one I should have never been allowed to see.
